A trip to the AD

Seeing as how I am new to watches, particularly the lesser known brands such as Panerai, I wanted to take a look at the watches myself before buying a replica. I found out that I am lucky enough to live within miles of an authorized dealer, and headed over there the other morning.

I got there and right away I knew any sales person was going to say, wtf is this guy doing in here? He cannot afford anything. They had over 300 Rolex's as I walked in, a very large assortment of Breitlings to the left, and then I saw the Panerei. Straight ahead near the back of the store.

I had to think quick on my feet if I actually wanted to touch any of these watches. Granted I truly did not know just how expensive they were, but I knew the salesperson would be skeptical to even take them out of the case for me. I came up with a plan and set it into action. I told the sales lady that my father's 50th bday was coming up and my mother wanted to get him something very special. I said he already owned one Panerei and I knew he had his eye on another.

Right away, BAM! The case opens and here comes all 10-12 they had in stock out for me to get a closer look. First I had a 177 in my hands and I really liked it. I commented to her that my father had small wrists similar to mine and he was unsure about another large dial watch. So I slipped it on and had a look. I must say, it looked very nice on my wrist :)

Now another one caught my eye with what looked to be a carbon fiber dial. Forgive me as I am new to Panerei and I did not catch the model number. I believe it could have possibly been a 241? Anyways I put this one on and comment that he would really like this one. She says, let me get you a price. Now remember, I still don't quite know what these watches cost. She flips through her book and says "Nineteen". In that next brief moment I think to myself, "hell for $1900 I'll just buy a real one eventually". Like I said, that moment was brief. She follows up by saying "Nineteen Six". I just about hit the floor. $20,000 for this watch?! And it's on my wrist?! I'm pretty sure all the blood drained from my face. I mean, I don't even have 20k to put down on a house let alone a watch

I regain my composure and take the watch off my wrist. I hand it back to her and politely ask for a card so that when I send my "mother" back, she will know who to speak with. We exchange pleasantries and I am out the door. I still could not believe the price of that watch.

And that my friends is why I am here and not on the authentic Panerai board.

19.6K wow :) I guess that's why I am here too.

Actually, collecting rep is more fun... the hunting for that near-perfect version of a certain model ^^
I just wish I had steadier hand and better hand-eye coordination to do the mods myself

I also saw a gen 177H in person and "tried" it on my wrist. I was so surprised how light it was and how cool TI can be... I usually hate Titanium-anything - golf clubs to sunglasses, but now I am in the market for that near-perfect 176 (177 without second hand dial).

Welcome.
You are lucky, PanerAi are repped in the highest quality, with the same kind of movement you can find in (older) gens. Read around and you will find what you are searching for.

But please, never go into an AD shop with a rep on your wrist.

I know it's silly, but I made this mistake once... about 3-4 months ago ... (I would never do it again)...

With my 111H from Ruby. But the salesperson, who claimed to be a member of Paneristi, bought that it was real and told me that he currently is sold out of the model. I tried to hide the watch underneath my sleeve but he saw the CG sticking out a little bit, and kept saying something like "I know you're a collector... what PAMs do you own? Do I see a crown guard?"

Now I know that this is a stupid thing to do... (I didn't know back then... but I was just afraid I would be called out so I tried to hide it under my sleeve)... so people don't do this - and yes, you can fool gen owners! now you know the answer! don't need to try it yourself!

:)

I agree, it's better to own 8 good quality rep over 1 gen. I rather have the luxury to switch watches and like they say, like the old saying, never put all your eggs in one basket. Plus, it's nice to wear them carefree.

Agreed,

I made the mistake of going in to the local (Canary Wharf) OMEEGA (Sorry, That was just for Seanf) AD when I had just got my TT $108 45mm PO and wanted to try on the Chrono version.

I took off mine and passed it to my wife so I could try on the real deal, whilst I was being shown the new range a 'helpful' assistant came over to my wife and offered to have the bracelet adjusted because he had noticed the clasp was a bit stiff.

And she handed it over

He zoomed out the back before I could even squeak and came back five, heartstopping, minutes later with the bracelet adjusted and kept telling me and everyone else how great the new PO's are!!!

Suffice it to say I have never worn a rep to an AD ever again :D :D

I don't know what the big deal is about going to an AD with reps on. I went to an AD the other day wearing all of my reps. I had six watches on one arm, and five on the other arm. I wanted them to know that I was "serious" about watches. As soon as I went in, I took all of them off, put them on the counter, and said in a loud voice, "Boy, I sure am glad these are all real watches! Yup! No fake Chinese replicas for me! I only buy authentic watches from authorized dealers!" The sales clerk and the security guard were both very nice to me, and they offered to clean all my watches while I continued shopping in the mall! Heh! Suckers. Come to think of it, they have been cleaning them for a while. Is four weeks normal for a cleaning? The clerk promised they'd come back just like new.

Same kind of thing hapend with me and my dad.

We where in a local jewerly store who also carried omegas. I was looking around and before I know I saw my dad taling with someone of the store. She was holding his cartier santos. I now knew he was asking here about a little screw that was missing and maybe they had something that fits.

He scared the hell out of me, few minutes later the woman came back with the glasp fixed and gave my dad a complement about the watch.

pffff I told him never to do that again, one of the only times my dad listens to me :)

I'm on a Gen board and I'm not a goddam effing snob! Now if you want to start some kind of class warfare, I will verbally bitch slap you proletariat weasels into submission.

Not sure why you would have to lie to look at watches? Here in Stockholm, Sweden, some of the salespeople at Rolex and Panerai might be a bit snobbish, but they are really nice. If you want to see a watch, just ask and they will help you out.

It helps if you know a little about watches, so they know you are genuinely interested. I went there today actually, had a collegesweater and jeans, no problem what so ever trying on different watches.

But maybe other countries AD´s isn´t as good!?

Take care,

Niclas from Sweden
