Chuck was a longtime friend of mine. Chuck, the most serious watch enthusiast I had ever known, but he did have some quirks about him. Chuck was OCD but it was he collecting watch gens and not me, so that didn't bother me, and I actually took jabs at his OCD every chance I could get.
We all gathered at Jims place for 2007 Thanksgiving dinner. As we sat down to eat , Chuck brandished his latest gen acquisition on his wrist, a slightly used Omega Speedmaster. (Chuck usually bought used, although he had the deep pockets to buy new) As Chuck was waving his arm showing off the Omega, it occurred to him the watch had stopped. His face changed from proud and jubilant to annoyance and confusion. Chuck tapped on the crystal and waved his arm around some more, but alas, his new acquisition had already died on him.
I could not resist showing Chuck my quartz timex, which was running, and I told Chuck the correct time. Both Jim and I got a great laugh about it, and Chuck seemed to have a nervous tick the rest of the night. I was proud that I could offer my watch collector friend the correct time.
I do miss Chuck.
