Montoya has an AP named after him.
Any other NASCAR guys have any watches named for them?

Can't think of any.....

The Florence-based watchmaker produced wrist worn diving instruments and about 300 watches, all for the Italian Marina Militare, between 1938 and 1993

The company is famous for its Radiomir and Luminor watches, notable for their use by Italian commando frogmen, who relied upon their Panerai wristwatches to execute the sinking of Allied naval vessels in WWII.

My guess would be, in WWII steal and rubber were need for better things than a watch band.

I don't understand the question. Are you asking why they used leather?

The very thick, homemade looking straps people seem to
enjoy on these watches; is there a historical precedent for
this practice, and/or is this just a modern preference for a style?
Did the Italian commandos use this type strap? If so, pics?
And why?

My guess is that CRK pretty much nailed it.....

Thanks!

A few reasons for the leather straps today are, 1) good classical looks 2) easier to make at home 3)unlimited amount of colors and styles in leather.

Yes, the vintage watches used leather straps with big, flat buckles. How thick the hide was varied, I'm certain.

So, it's a mix of both historical correctness and personal preference, I'd wager....
