A Funny Thing Happened On My Way Down The Rabbit Hole...

Not too long ago, I was wasting time on You Tube, not looking for anything to do with watches and noticed that the algorithm was suggesting an Anthony Farrer video that caught my interest for some reason, so I clicked on it...

I had very little knowledge of the AD luxury watch world, much less the "grey market" aspect of things. Needless to say, once I watched a few Nico Leonard and Roman Sharf videos, my suggested videos list rapidly became full with all things watch related(normally it would be guitar related).

Through these suggestions I was introduced to the realm of the clones which is something that also exists in the guitar world.

Though I have always liked watches, I never considered a luxury brand and was always happy with Seikos and Casios and the like. After viewing so many videos, I discovered that I really like the Rolex Daytonas and GMTs for their classic and somewhat rugged styling and also discovered that I'm not drawn toward APs or Hublots or things of that nature, too "high concept" for me I suppose.

Anyway, one thing lead to another and eventually found myself here. I have been PMing with a TD here and hope to confirm my first order later today.

So, there's my first post, Hello!

Hi and welcome to RWI! Glad you found your way here.

Nice intro. You're not drawn to APs ...now. wait and see. I wasn't either when I subscribed. Now I have 4. Hublot is another story, I'll never have one....

Please take some time to read the sticky threads in the new members area (all subsections), learn the basic forum rules and get some very good advice in the process. A number of questions has already been answered there, this is just an example:

As a new subscriber, you've already been directed to this thread, please read carefully and look through the linked additional threads:

Another good thread to read to understand where RWI comes from and some fundamentals is this:

Most of the information you need to know to start is there. If you're preparing to buy, read the stickies before ordering. When you're finished, you can continue learning by reading the stickies in all remaining sections. If it's stickied, it's important information.

If you intend to sell, read the sales rules and all stickies in the sales section with particular care and make sure you understand each single rule. Sales rules infraction is taken very seriously here. As a new member you are not eligible to sell. Using the sales section is a privilege, eligibility must be earned, make sure you know and understand how.

For anything else, feel free to reach out to @eBoy or me, we're happy to assist, advise, direct, explain. Don't hesitate.

Don't be afraid to post noob questions in the new members area. In doubt, use the flame free zone. If you feel uncomfortable anywhere in the new members area, please reach out to @eBoy or me. Mutual respect is of utmost importance to us. On the other hand, we're grown-ups and are supposed to be able to deal with a bit of irony, don't take it personally, ever, a bit of irony never harmed anyone. If you laugh at jokes, you'll make friends faster.

This forum is a treasure trove of information and benefits from the engagement of all members who take their time to share their knowledge, help each other out and have some fun. We hope that you'll benefit and enjoy this platform as well as contribute positively to it.

If at any point you feel to contribute also on another level, feel free to pm the boss (trailboss99) to become a supporter and get some little perks with the status (editing rights, for example).

Enjoy the forum.

Thanks Feefo! Yes I have read most of what you posted above already before contacting the TD. Even still, I got a little ahead of myself and was going to order 2 watches as a first purchase, then something the TD said about be cautious with payments from noobs made me realise that as a noob, I should temper my expectations and enthusiam and order a single watch and see how it goes...

Yeah, that would be wise for a first purchase.
Have you already selected a watch?

When I got into this genre I couldn’t understand why people would buy more than one watch; what was the point? Now, some years later, I look at my modest collection and wonder how it happened. Also it’s odd how I unconsciously moved from buying from TD’s to looking for good pre-owned watches from forum members. I nervously await the next phase of my ‘hobby’.

The main advantage to ordering more than one rep at a time from a TD is the reduction in shipping cost. If the TD charges $40 (as some do), then buying two or even three in one hit makes a significant difference to the overall cost - $40 as opposed to $120 if bought separately.

It's worth bearing in mind, should the obsession really kick in... :)

Congrats on getting bitten by the bug and falling into the world of reps.

Just like there are hundreds of copies/ variations of the iconic strat design: some brands supersede Fender's original strat design in terms of quality and playability. I used to collect rare Fender Stratocasters before my current addiction to watches. Welcome to this forum!
