A Couple of Interesting Straps

Hello all.

I have a couple of straps for you to check out. Let me tell you the story on these. I came across this hide as a very small sample swatch from a distributor here in the US. I asked for a larger sample so that I could really get a good look at it.

Once I received the larger sample I was told that this was the only weight (i.e. thickness) that I could get and there was no way to special order, etc. This would mean that all straps made out of this hide would have to be three layer straps.

After thinking about it for a while I decided to pull the trigger on the order. This was not entered into lightly because this was an imported hide and I would have to buy a minimum of two sides (which is a boatload of leather if you're just using it for watch straps!). Plus it was very expensive to boot!

A month or so goes by and the distributor gets the leather in and calls me. Bad news! The weight is wrong and the color is totally off. So, he contacts the tannery and is told that they can no longer offer the leather from the sample swatch! Argh!

So, I made four straps from the sample piece that I had. Two have already been sold and these are the only two remaining.

Now, one of the customers that bought one conditioned it and twisted it around a bunch. In so doing, the edge finish started to crack and peel some.

So, I'm selling these with the caveat that, depending on how hard on the edges you are, they may be an issue. Maybe, maybe not, but I want the information out there so that you know.

Without further ado, here they are:

Specs on the first are:

24/24
145/80 - TAIL BABY!!!
Approx. 5mm thick
Fully stitched (dead end style) with off-white thread
6 holes punched with the first at 50mm from lug end
Brushed Pre-V style buckle

Specs on the second are:

26/26
137/74
Approx. 4.85mm thick
Fully stitched (dead end style) with off-white thread
6 holes punched with the first at 45mm from lug end
Brushed Pre-V style buckle

I would normally price these as protos and they would be higher than standard pricing. But, because of the potential edge issue, I'm going to just price as normal.

So, asking $100 each delivered in the US (International add $10)

I'm listing them here exclusively for a day or two. If they don't sell, then I'm going to increase the prices and list on Paneristi! So, if you like them, get 'em now!

Payment by PayPal only. Sold first-come-first-served via email at [email protected] (please email rather than pm).

Thanks for looking.

I have the prototype of this strap and it's great! Like a red-ish Crazy Horse leather. I'm talking about the original Crazy Horse hides, not Greg's new ones. I'm in the process of sanding down the edges to remove the flaking edge coat. Cracking edge coat or not I love this strap! It has now become at least as soft as my Crazy Horse strap. I can't wait to finish cleaning up the edges and eventually get a PVD watch to mount it on!

Savage, I'll be emailing you about options for the edges after I clean off the black edge coat. I'm think just the tragacanth treatment like you did on the buckskin strap for my 210.

At any rate, buy one of these, people! You won't be sorry!

Here is a pic of the strap on my 010D:

Cool leather. I have seen the side coating crack and split on even very expensive straps. It really depends on the sponginess of the leather. I personally think this just adds to the character of the strap.
