Hey all, I'm new to REP's and to Panerai but I've always been curious about them but not willing to make the investment as was never sure I could actually live with the piece, so the REP route is a great way to get to know the watch.
I purchased this from MR -> Link
Overall impressions:
I made a small mistake of not going to the AD and really looking at the 505 first. I've been considering the 177 but availability was spotty so saw a thread about the 505 and figured I'd give it a chance.
I like the Radiomir shape and like the thought of a unique color, however I wasn't really prepared for just how chocolate the color is.
The honest appraisal is, I don't know how much wrist time this piece will actually get in my rotation. I'm typically in a suit during the week and edge towards prep on weekends, so the styling is a bit discordant for me. I wouldn't have gone for the 505 if I would have gone to see it in person. That's life!
With that said, I do admire the watch and want to figure out how to work it into my rotation without looking strange.
The watch itself is lovely but the crystal is very reflective and a finger print magnet. My other watches, both gen and rep, don't have this issue but also don't quite have the surface area either so not sure if it's a material/coating/or practical issue of having a crystal that large.
And then we come to the strap. The rep strap, while in isolation seeming like a nice enough strap, compared to the GEN just doesn't even begin to measure up. The first thing I did after ordering the 505 was go to the AD and buy the gen version so I could have it as a comparison, and one of the most exciting aspects of having a Panerai is the strap collection and changing that comes with it and originally drew me to this brand in the first place. I think the luminor is a lot easier to swap straps so am looking forward to that.
Replacing the strap was an absolute tedious nightmare as I didn't want to either scratch my case or destroy the threads as I had read that's a common problem. I was really hoping it would be a simple thing I could do often but alas, that most certainly is NOT the case! And with that said, I couldn't really find any of the other GEN straps that actually go well with the chocolate other than the asso. Thinking maybe a yellowish croc would be nice but will have to look around. There aren't many 505's out there without the asso strap so it's hard to see what goes well with it.
Anyway, I am going to order a couple of different PAM's and see which one works best for me, looking at the 113 next as seen in -> This link
I've put all the pictures up -> Here
Apologies for the quality as all I have is a potato. Additional comments on each picture in the album.
