2824-2 crown slipping when setting time

Got a bit of an issue with my smp 2824-2 movement. Getting crown slip when I try to set the time. Seems to work in reverse and winds okay. The date doesn’t seem to want to set too... I removed the crown and reinserted it hoping it would help but was to no avail...

Is there going to be a relatively simple fix for something like this is is it time for a trip to a watchmaker? Thanks in advance!

I didn’t even check that! What’s the best way to tighten it without running the risk of bending the stem?

i usually use a pin vice , but you can grab the stem with a pair of needle nose pliars kind of close to the crown then tighten the crown .......be gentle , the stems break very easy , and it doesnt have to be super tight .

The crown clutch may be slipping - if you can set the time whilst pulling lightly on the crown (away from the case) it means the spring is worn, a new crown will fix the problem.

No, there is a clutch mechanism inside the crown - when you push the crown down on it's stem to screw it back onto the tube, the teeth in the clutch disengage allowing the crown the turn and thread onto the tube. When you release pressure on the crown it pops back out from the pressure of the spring inside the clutch.

If the crown slips in time setting, but will 'bite' if you pull the crown away from the case either the teeth in the clutch are worn or the spring has partially failed - you need a new crown, not a new stem.

If the symptoms are not as described above it could be something else causing the problem.

Just got home and tried it out. It’s still not catching and setting when I pull the crown away from the case but does set anti-clockwise? Also, date doesn’t seem to set in position 1 if that makes sense.

So it will engage and the hands will move if you pull the crown gently away from the case whilst turning the hands anticlockwise - correct ?

Sounds like a worn clutch in the crown - if it wasn't screwed onto the stem correctly then it would be the opposite of what you describe -it would engage when turning the hands clockwise, and unscrew itself from the stem turning them anticlockwise. Replace the crown.

I would replace the crown first, it's probably what's causing the issue, if it doesn't resolve it the keyless works may have a worn/badly seated part.

Thanks for the help buddy. Checked the stem and it’s nice and tight. Think I’m going to need someone more competent to take a look at it as it’s beyond my technical ability!

Open to suggestions who will be able to fix/service this for me, based in the UK!

Interesting read and replies by experienced users and mod here! don't mind i ask, i've a ARF SD43 using 2824, i faced crown slipping before but now when i try to wind the watch the crown just doesn't move and stuck there anyone know what causes this?
