For first PAM, most will recommend the 111H or 177H for the simplicity of the Luminor Marina design. There are some who might prefer the Base design, which is similar to the Marina without the second hand @ 9. Luminor Base will be 112H (stainless steel) or 176H (titanium).
The Luminor Marina/Base mentioned above are all based on ETA 6497 (formerly known as Unitas) handwind movement, which is what the Panerai OP XI design is based from. There are also the automatic Marina but it's less desirable than the handwind in the rep world.
The reason why many are recommending DSN is because all out-of-the-box panerai offered by dealers have some obvious flaws and DSN has been the only one offering these flaws corrected out-of-the-box. His cases are the closest to the gen, according to many, as he makes his own cases instead of sourcing from manufacturers. Great deals for first-timers. The flaws corrected include:
- recessed cannon pin
- lume
- crown thickness and crown guard
- swan neck
Recently there is another dealer TWP who offers the regular factory manufactured with the above modded, but at a higher price than DSN. These modded pannies offered by TWP are sometimes preferred as some feel that the thicker sandwich dials resembles the gen better. It's still a debatable belief.
So go with the advise from the above. Look at Davidsen's section for his DSN, or if you wish to spend more, look at TWP's modded in his website.
Good luck and hope you'd find your virgin pannie delightful
