David is your man

Go /w David. His AR sapphire for the 127 is the best IMO. He also has some plexis.

I heard there's a guy posting some on the German 'Bay - but no experience so can't comment...

defective?

Davidsen's Sapphire AR - are the best looking for the 127, 217, 203 hands down. He can also provide Plexiglass, but on those models it wouldn't be accurate. And Mineral Glass is best to be avoided at all costs. Too many defective ones out there to want to buy one as a part!

is it the mineral ones that explode, the sapphire, or both????

pm, I think it's almost entirely the mineral ones that explode. I think there were some that were "supposed" sapphire, but the owners wondered about the truthfulness of that? I'm not sure, so don't take that as gospel.

I haven't heard anyone complain of a Davidsen crystal exploding, so that would be the best/safest bet.

Plus the AR is nice.

Both of the 127 & 217 have Davidsen's AR crystal

Fiddy rep Sapphire crystals definitely explode, and no, the one on the picture below is not a 'mineral glass' but real sapphire.
After it exploded I decided to do a little bit of Sherlock Holmes myself, got the fragments inspected by both the watchmaker of mine and the person that makes prescription glass lenses. They both concluded - A/R coated sapphire, but were both perplexed as to why would it explode in such a violent way.

My watchmaker asked me if I had hit it or scratched with a sharp object...however the watch was only 5 days old when the crystal popped, never left home with it.

Once I received a replacement A/R sapphire from David (DSN), I compared it quickly with the broken one, David's is 2.5mm thick, "original" only 2mm. I believe the genuine 127 is also 2.5mm. The curvature and slope of the crystal closer to bezel side is also slightly different, at least that's what I could "measure" with a naked eye from broken remnants still standing inside bezel.

So, to cut the long story short, DSN A/R Sapphire is definitely the way to go, at least IMO, for all those 127, 217, 203s out there :)
So far I haven't heard of any "exploding crystal" experience with DSN sapphire crystals...have you ?

cheers,
babola

Thanks for the responses. Davidsens do seem the way to go. I was interested in this as I traded a 127 with someone (not a board member) and of course the crystal broken! He's a bit upset and I was looking to come up with some options for him with regards to a replacement. Although I'm aware the Davidsen one is the best I'm not sure if he will freak about the price!

Will fit Andrew´s Asian H0117?

Thanks for the info guys, I am also planning on changing the glass of my 217. A couple of noob question here for the experts or the guys that have done this before...

Maybe all dealers sell 217/127 with the same measures, but just to make sure before buying, don´t want any surprices...

Will David's sapphire fit Andrew's 217 Asian version (H0117)?
How hard to change is is? and is there any topic in the forum where I can read about this task?

Thanks again and sorry for hijacking the post

Salute!

DSN 127/217/203 crystals are currently going for $85.
Just as Takashi said, you'll need a crystal press to install it into the bezel. Best to leave it with your watchmaker, but word of caution here, not all of them have press inserts supporting a large crystal diametar like Fiddy's.

Definitelly not something you'd do by yourself if you don't have a proper press. Bezel is a diferent story, especially on new Fiddy cases. The new cases come with the white plastic spacer/seal between the case and bezel. It (bezel) can be lifted up easily with a pocket knife and re-installed by hand, very slowly and carefully since if you press at the wrong point you could break the crystal.

Some watchmakers install the crystal into the bezel taken off the case, some choose to install it with the bezel on the case.

crystals are NOT the same size, and can be different diameters. Sub mm differences probably won't matter as the retaining ring is plastic.

Most 127s you can get an accurate measuement of the crystal even set in the case as there is bit of sidewall exposed to apply calibres. If it's broken you can still measure the bezel/retainer dimension.
If the crystals a lot smaller, there is the option of UV crystal glue.

DO you need a VISE?

A crystal press makes this job SO EASY it's not even funny. But most crystal presses won't have a large diameter die, so even they are a compromise. Scrap leather is your friend and you can make a circle to layer between the crystal and the smaller die. (the die BTW will cut up the leather, better than the surface of the crystal!)

For the really adventurous. There are ways around special tools. A 4 in. C-Clamp can turn into a bargain priced tool. You will have to find a large washer or some found metal part to use as the die. That layer of leather will make a good contact inbetween again. Pressing a crystal in, you'd want to use the whole case and protect the backcase with a layer of similar, leather. Just place the die in the Screw part and the case should sit on the "C" (you can use this same bargain tool to Set crown tubes!)

...and this again proves there's no end to an infamous Kiwi bloke's ingenuity :D

cheers mate,

Holy thread revival, Batman!

I don't think DSN has any domed sapphires for the 44mm watches, unfortunately. Just the 47mm models.

Davidsen has a section here under our "Trusted Dealers" forum. His contact details are in his sub-forum.

Add more to the thread revival

The crystal on my fiddy just blew too. Same circumstances same source as most.
I thought I was a lucky one when this was a problem a while back.

I can't complain it lasted 3 years.

Does anyone have info on what size dies I need for the crystal press?
I'd hate to spend $120-(the cuurent dsn price for fiddy crystals)
and use the wrong die size and crack the crystal. Im a newb to replacing
crystals and I would assume the size you use on this crystal would be different
due to it's domed shape.

I wish I'd known about the exploding crystals 4 month ago, before I bought my 270. I was so mystified by my crystal popping, that I didn't know what had hit me.

Well, I got a new crystal from Hont at 1/3 of the price of a DSN crystal. OK, it's a mineral and it might pop again in a month or a year, but so be it. Maybe I'll try DSN then :)

Then I found an excellent presser on the bay at a very nice price http://cgi.ebay.com/0131-Watch-Case...547?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a1a3e4cb

And Bob's your uncle!

Installing it was very easy and I'm on a DIY high now
