Hi guys,

Just got my 111 from a TD, watch looks great but have a slight problem with the lugs on one side.

The screwbar when received was not screwed in, but held in with some black gunk. I only noticed as I was wearing it & noticed the screw end had started to show - ie was coming out of the watch.

That screwbar has no grip inside the lug. When I use the other screwbar, it grips the lug screw thread but will only go in half way, leaving 2mm of bar sticking out of the lug.

I've tried cleaning the inside of the lug, and screwing the bar in from the outside of the case to free the thread, but am slowly convincing myself that it's not got a full, correctly cut thread in the lug.

Any thoughts / tips?

Matt

Matt…I would be concerned because, as you have said, it was held in with some type of black gunk. If that is true and you
did not have any of that gunk on the other screw thread, it would appear that someone might have tried some sort of "fix".
I would try to take some detailed photos and contact your TD…see what they say.

The "black gunk" is probably polishing compound residue that didn't get wiped off completely. When I refinish a polished watch, I have to use a toothpick to clean out the lug holes.

The first thing you always need to do with a rep that doesn't have the lug screws screwed all of the way in is first remove them, then gently screw them in counter-clockwise approximately a half-turn until you hear/feel a little click (this means you have started the threads with the proper alignment), then continue screwing them in clock-wise. This lessens your chance of possibly cross-threading your screws (which it sounds like what has started to happen to yours, and that's the resistance your getting as you can't screw it in all of the way).

So just back out the screw and start over again using the method I suggested. You should do this on all gens as well.

Try the system suggested by projecto, he is a big expert, if you have no luck buy the bars suggested by Fiddo, they work perfectly and they look like a screw bar. Many people do that

Well, I'm confused..I thought he said the screwbar was in, but not screwed in…and had no grip inside the lug, like it was stripped.
My mistake if I misunderstood.

Thanks guys.

One of the screw bars has basically zero thread & slides in and out of the lugs.

The other screw bar is perfect & screws in just fine to the 6 o'clock lug.

When I try it in the 12 o'clock lug it screws in about half of its journey before being tight.

At this stage, there is still 2mm remaining outside of the lug at the screw end.

Projecto - thanks for your pm & post above, will try that & take some photos should it not work to aid diagnosis.

Toro is sending another pair of bars, but I don't think that is the problem as believe it is the lug thread rather than on the bars.

This is as far as a working screwbar will screw into the lug before it stops turning & is fully tight.

I know I could use springbars that look like the screwbars, but the ones I have are not visible in the lugs at the opposite end to the fake screw head, and am worried they are therefore not full seated.

The spring bars suggested from Panatime are not standard , they are specially made for Luminor lugs and have even the screw head simulated.

Hi Ale,

sorry, i wasnt clear. I already have some of those from panatime that emulate the screw bars. But the end that would have the thread doesn't appear visible through the lug. I'm loathed to spend more money for the same result. Especially when I have 4 pairs of screw bars &cant use them in the lugs for some reason.

am I being too picky wanting the new rep to accept the screws?

TD still seems convinced that new bars will solve the problem.

i know the lug needs tapping. How long before I can ask for exchange?

Was hoping to wear this as my Xmas watch, guessing not if I can only wear on screwbar springbars from panatime & want to return it.

bugger

Yea spring bars are much better to use. There's almost no chances of scratching your lugs as you can change straps. And you will be changing straps as that is half the appeal of owning a pam. So I would invest in those spring bars. I got mine on ebay for 10 and they are a great fit.

Mj2k, sorry no one seems to be listening to you. If you can't convince Toro that your lug is not tapped completely, and you keep that watch, you could find
a watchsmith to do it…or maybe a good machine shop. I think it will need about a 1.3mm tap, and will have to be re-tapped from the inside of the problem lug.
Another solution would be to drill out the tapped lugs to make your Panatime spring bars work more securely. Re-tapping is surprisingly easy, but you have to
get the right size to match the partial tapping that has been done. I just checked in the shop and I don't have it…if I did I would just mail it to you.

Thanks Marco.

Strangely the non-screw head end of the panatime Springbar fits through the hole correctly if I present it from the outside, but not the inside.

It does this on both lugs, I assume therefore that my springbars are too fat / short? All the photos I have seen have them visible from both ends & this was certainly the case with my homage.

Seasonal Greetings.

Toro had agreed to take it back to fix, but located a local watch smith who was extremely impressed with the quality of the rep & re-tapped the lug for a very reasonable cost.

I may have found someone willing to service a rep, which could be very useful in the future - great workmanship as well from what he was showing me in his workshop.

Cheers to those who provided advice.

Perfect solution, and a bonus watch smith!

Would love to know the tap size if you could get that info from him.
I was just guessing at the 1.3mm, and that would be great info for us all to have.
I would certainly be willing to buy the tap and mail it to anyone CONUS that wants to use it.

Of course, this is the best solution knowing the size of the TAP as said by marcogumbo

Therefore, please try to get the info from your watchsmith and share it !!

I will be sure to ask him when I am in there in a couple of days
