001B conversion:

hi gang, I have Angus 111E with thin dial (I think :p ) and I wanted to convert it into a 001B, so I'm doing the following:

1. get 001B OP6518 caseback in Bxxxxx/3000 serial caseback
2. remove AR
3. get a Swiss 6497 (no decor, since closeback)
4. 22mm Pre-V buckle

Am I wrong, or missing something? Let me know.

Also,

a. can any of the modders remove AR or at least send it out to get it removed?
b. where can I source swiss 6497 other than Ofrei?
c. would this mod be a pain if my 111E turns out to be the Vac warned thick dial?

Thanks RWI'ers!

I think you are better off buying a non AR sapphire xtal from dsn. :)

Mate, I just ordered a 6497 undecorated from ofrei and it was delivered in less than three days. nice movement. The only problem is the stack hight of the cannon pin. it is designed for no second hands. very short. i used the cannon pin and hour wheel from the modded asian movement that came with my jimmyfu kit and it has kept perfect time with my other swiss movement for three days now. i have sat the movement dial side up, dial side down, sideways, on a 45 degree angle, tapped the movement to see if the cannon pin moves, etc etc. i have done all this because the asian cannon pin, whilst secure, did not "snap" in place. but i figure the pressure from the dial on the movement, and the movement in the case will keep everything snug as a bug in a rug.

DSN or vac could probably supply you with an undecorated Swiss 6497. Just a quick question, though. Why not just use the Asian movement that's in your 111E currently? No sense spending money you don't need to, IMO.

I heard from Jack at IWW that automotive "cutting polish" made to remove light scratches from a car's clear coat will work to remove AR. I've never tried it myself, however.

For $80, I'd just get a non-AR crystal from DSN (in fact, that's exactly what I did).

22mm Pre-V style buckle is incorrect for B series watches. Should be a thumbnail buckle, I believe. Regardless, people swap out straps/buckles constantly so just go with what you like.

You need to get a relume, if you haven't done it yet.

@ pete2528ca: Cool! I'll look into that. With my supposed thin dial 111, hopefully canon pin won't be an issue and the ETA would fit fine.

@ hooligan: I thought K2222 also does AR removal; don't know; I'll ask, and if DSN no AR xtal is cheaper than the process, I'll go that route. Hopefully, my 111 is the thin dial as opposed to the Vac-identified-problematic dial. It's got ivory lume, flush canon pin, and no "grinding/winding" problem Vac identified with misplaced thick dials. I'm thinking/hoping that it's fine/it's a thin dial(?) As for your movement comment, I agree. I just wanted to have it as a 111E until/if the Asian movement craps out, then I can make it into a Swiss 001B. I thought I hang on to this one for awhile, and I thought buying a swiss mov would be a good insurance and investment as ETA phaseout stage starts soon.

@drfc...

The dial I have is a true 001b from Josh. It isn't a sangwish (my italian accent coming out), so I can only assume it is a thin dial. Problem however is that the 113 dial that I had was also thin, and the stack hight was off. you will definately need a taller canon pin and hour wheel.

the swap i did seems to work very well. how is the pin in the 111? if it isn't recessed use that.

it has no canon pin recess; I'm thinking it's a thin dial for sure, since I doubt that when they ran out of the 111E thin dials, that they would have put in high canon pinions (extra $) with the thick stock that Vacumm is identifying as problematic.

Hey DRFC...

I read that before. I thought you meant issues with the cannon pin swap. Yeah I actually encountered that same problem with a watch I was building for a mate.

My solution was to take a piece of glass, and taping a piece of medium grit automotive emery cloth/sandpaper on it and after cutting off the dial feet proceeded to sand down the dial. i had my calipers and kept measuring till i got to the thickness that worked. i don't remember what it was, but it took an hour of back and forth, back and forth, wax on wax off, paint the fence...etc etc.

it actually worked quite well.

reviving this topic again...

1. I have a non-AR Xystal and 001B caseback on their way.

2. I'm thinking about putting in non-decor Swiss 6497 as mentioned above.

3. Now, although the ultimate 111E I have comes with thick crown, I know that I'll still want the "perfect" crown.

4. So, what are the dimensions of the 001B correct crown (I believe 1.9mm), and who can source the most "gen-like" crown? DSN? Vaccum? Palp?

P.S. I understand that the palp crown is NOT gen size, although looks really cool.

Authentic crown specifications are 60 teeth, 1,95mm thick and 0,5mm socket height between the case and the crown corpus. Hope that helps.

All PAMs before D series were without AR, I do believe. B series was definitely no AR, C series might have been "transitional" with regards to AR, I'm not certain.

Usefull info guys. I've got two 111E's sitting here. One swiss and one asian. Am thinking about pulling the swiss E movement out of one and turning it into an 001B as well.
