“Recoil” when winding?

Hello!

One of my manual wind 6497s has what I’ll call “recoil” when winding. Essentially, when I wind the crown, it “recoils back”/winds back more aggressively than any other 6497 I’ve had.

Any thoughts as to why?

Thanks.

Hello!

Do you mean that after scrolling in the direction of winding, it unscrews back further than the others?

If so, then the matter is likely only in the amplitude of the travel of the retainer.

You can see in the photo, the wheels are spinning in the order shown, and the # 3 retainer allows the drum gear to turn because there is a short spring under it.
As soon as you remove your hand from the crown, the drum gear tends to unwind back, but the retainer catches it to its extreme position.
The reason for the strong recoil may be that the spring of the retainer has the wrong length, and its stroke is longer. That is, it catches the gear later. It is also possible that the screw fixing it came out and the retainer loosens, and can catch the gear later, but then it should be different once at a time. Also, its tip may be worn out and does not grab the gear tooth immediately.

If this has always been, and is always the same, with any number of revolutions, then I tend to the first option. And then nothing needs to be done, it's just that this 6497 lives like this. If desired, check that all screws are fully tightened.

In any case, even if something is out of order, repairing this part is simple and cheap.

That’s exactly right. Thanks so much for interpreting my question :)
