Hi All,

I am probably asking the same question that comes up on a regular basis, and you are all pretty tired of replying too... But I thought I would ask, before I jump in and buy blind.

I am looking for a nice copy of the GMT Master II Ceramic, lovely watch. I know these have their faults as nothing is 100% accurate, if they were Rolex would be out of business...
I just want a reliable movement, accurate time keeping and good quality rep.

I have been through the recomended dealers pages and have come up with these two, seem to be the best out there...

http://www.trevorwatch.info/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5_251&products_id=4449

Has anyone bought these models from Trevor before? Whats are they like?
The lume looks pretty good to me on the first, and it is waterproof, which is a must for me. Is it worth paying the extra cash for the Nickle Plated Asian Clone (Rolex 3186) Automatic Movement ($308) or should I stick with the Swiss Eta 2836-2 Modified Automatic Movement ($268)

Are there other dealers out there with identical models at lower price? Hont appears to be a RWI favourite trader, but his site is not up and running properly and prices are not up, does anyone know if he carries both these models.

So many questions, any time taken by anyone to reply would be greatly appreciated before I part with my cash that I have been saving for a long time now...

Andy...

I picked one of these up from Josh (Trusty).
I got the Asia 2836 and couldnt be happier.
Keeping great time only +2 sec a day.
Think I paid 200 or so for it.

Good advice from both. With so many very good Reps out there for less than $200 it is hard for me to justify anything over $200 unless it is for a very good ETA or maybe a 7750. Of course there are the Pams...... that's a different topic.:cool2:

Hont quotes prices on a daily basis. Just email him but send a pic of what you want, regardless if it is from another dealer.

ON what eta vs 21j or swiss vs clone. I'd go for clone all the way.

don´t be so sure about factory waterproofing..

don´t forget to take your watch to your watchsmith and test it... grease all orings and seals, and you´ll be ok with water

Those links don't work for me, so I can't see what you're looking at... However, the new version of this rep seems to have three benefits... the colour of the numbers on the bezel insert is more accurate, and the steel is higher quality. I also believe that although it is ICHS, the movement behaves more similarly to the gen (i.e., one hour increments in the hour hand). Now, like I said, I can't see the watches you linked to, so maybe the non-3186 version you're looking at also already has some of these benefits... In short, I wouldn't buy it for the nickle plating or whatever gimmick... but if I were already spending close to 300 bucks I would throw in a few extra dollars and go for the new version. But only because of the better bezel, steel and hour increments feature. It depends on how much those details matter to you. If they don't, go Asian!

On a different note, are you sure you want your email address as your username? If you want to change it we can do that for you. Just let us know.

First of all - WELCOME!
1) Do NOT pay the upgrade for the deocorated 3186 movement. It's a rip-off and would NEVER fool anyone who can/would open the back of a Rolex anyway.

2) No Need to poay extra for gen ETA movement. The less expensive clone 2824 or 2836 movements are arguable as good as the ETA, and chances are you WILL get a clone even if you pay extra for the gen ETA (just ask nbarker).

3) Most dealers get the same watches from the same sources. You can always e-mail Hont a pic of what you are looking for (Hont does not publicize prices) even if the pic came from another dealer's site. He can tell you how much he would charge.

4) NEVER trust a dealer's claim that a rep watch is waterproof! You will find thread after thread in the archives proving this statement false far too often. And this is not like buying from a reputable store - there will be little to no warranty on these items. ALWAYS have the watch tested for water tightness before even taking a shower with it on.

5) Since you are from Scotland, you may want to talk with PreciousTime and Narikaa - they both ship from the UK so you will have much faster delivery and no Customs worries. This is often worth a few dollars more.

6) DO NOT forget the most important rule of membership here at RWI: Until we see pics, you're just a lying bastard that has no watch!! :biglaugh:

Good Luck!!

LMR gave you some good advice. Just a couple of clarifications though...

1) Do NOT pay the upgrade for the deocorated 3186 movement. It's a rip-off and would NEVER fool anyone who can/would open the back of a Rolex anyway.

Correct. Don't buy it for the decoration. But if you care about the better case, better bezel insert and gen-like functioning of the hour hand despite the ICHS movement, then it's worth it. Depends how anal you are about these things.

5) Since you are from Scotland, you may want to talk with PreciousTime and Narikaa - they both ship from the UK so you will have much faster delivery and no Customs worries. This is often worth a few dollars more.

Quite the opposite, LMR! These guys hold very small inventory in the UK. For most orders, you still have to wait for them to get it from Asia, repackage it, and forward it on to the buyer. So it actually takes a few days longer to get your order. The key benefits of buying from UK-based dealers are a lower risk if you live in European countries with tough customs (e.g., Germany and the like), and I guess the QC before it gets to you. But if you're UK-based the customs risks are so small that you can order from whoever can offer you the best deal.
