OK, so I have a white SOSF I got from Greg last year (before the arrow second hand, but with the correct red paint) and since I have been wearing Narikka's Planet Ocean, the SOSF wasn't getting any wrist time. I decided to give it to my 18 year old son, who went to a few places in the mall to get 2 links removed.
THe mall couldn't do it, (?) needed a tool they didn't have - but they commented to him what a nice watch it was. But it was the mall, you know?
So, he took it to a jeweler near us, who is a early 60's guy, been at the location for 25years, a really knowledegable guy, very nice. I had him appraise some old watches of my grandfather, and I got a 1/2 hour lesson in the workings of Gruen watches, and why they are junk these days.
So, my son brings in this watch, and I had warned him, if he gets called out on it, to play dumb, and say he got it as a gift from an uncle and not to admit knowing anything.
Well, the guy, is like "is this a real Breitling?" My son is like "I dunno, it's a gift"...probably sweating bullets at this point. But he has to get the links out either way, and if it means getting called out, then so be it.
The guy gets his magnifyers and starts poring over this thing, front and back. Doesn't crack it open, though - he says "This is a real Breitling. Hey Marge, this young man has a real Breitling!' "Young man, your Uncle must really like you, this is a $4,000 watch!" My son was "oh..uh..it is? .."
So, the guys does the links, brings my son into the back, shows him the polisher, and then polishes it up for free, and tells him to bring it back anytime for free polishing.
Morale of story, is not my son strutting in and saying his porsche cost more than this guys house,
but rather call out the quality of Greg's SOSF, which has been touted as one of the best reps out there- and this is just a little tale to help affirm that a bit more!
