My D4ME White SOSF fooled jeweler-

OK, so I have a white SOSF I got from Greg last year (before the arrow second hand, but with the correct red paint) and since I have been wearing Narikka's Planet Ocean, the SOSF wasn't getting any wrist time. I decided to give it to my 18 year old son, who went to a few places in the mall to get 2 links removed.

THe mall couldn't do it, (?) needed a tool they didn't have - but they commented to him what a nice watch it was. But it was the mall, you know?

So, he took it to a jeweler near us, who is a early 60's guy, been at the location for 25years, a really knowledegable guy, very nice. I had him appraise some old watches of my grandfather, and I got a 1/2 hour lesson in the workings of Gruen watches, and why they are junk these days. :)

So, my son brings in this watch, and I had warned him, if he gets called out on it, to play dumb, and say he got it as a gift from an uncle and not to admit knowing anything. :) Well, the guy, is like "is this a real Breitling?" My son is like "I dunno, it's a gift"...probably sweating bullets at this point. But he has to get the links out either way, and if it means getting called out, then so be it.

The guy gets his magnifyers and starts poring over this thing, front and back. Doesn't crack it open, though - he says "This is a real Breitling. Hey Marge, this young man has a real Breitling!' "Young man, your Uncle must really like you, this is a $4,000 watch!" My son was "oh..uh..it is? .."

So, the guys does the links, brings my son into the back, shows him the polisher, and then polishes it up for free, and tells him to bring it back anytime for free polishing.

Morale of story, is not my son strutting in and saying his porsche cost more than this guys house, :) but rather call out the quality of Greg's SOSF, which has been touted as one of the best reps out there- and this is just a little tale to help affirm that a bit more!

I really like these stories, best what ever happened to me was to add an additional link on my wifes MBW Explorer, that was done at an Rolex AD. The only problem was the 50 Eur bill

Hey hiya Doug -

Correct descritption , except he's 6'5" -:).......and actually, the store I was referring to in the mall was downstairs at the other place, I forget the name. The little store... 1st level.

You guys didn't comment on the watch. What he did tell me was there was a woman there at Time after Time, who was on the rude side to him when he came back to get it, sort of "threw" the watch back, and said "can't be done". No reason to be rude to your customers who have been going to TAT for watch stuff for years, but maybe will go downstairs from now on. Might want to pass that along to the employees there.

So, the jewler who took the links out gave him a quizzical look as to the rusted links and said "Who told you they couldn't take these links out because they are rusted?" So my son says, that both watch places said that they couldn't. My son tells me the jeweler guy says "they aren't rusted stuck, they just don't know how to take them out." Gets some sort of tool, and angle pushes them right out no problem. Weird.

Anyway, as I said, it would have been fine to have been called out as fake, as he was expecting it, especially from a dealer/repairer. Just surprised nobody did. Except now, of course.

actually "Time after Time" is the place downstairs on the first level where i work, "Its About Time" is the rude place upstairs lol.

i NEVER tell the customer there watch is fake because one guy flipped out on me ahah so i just handed it back and told him to take it where he got it he said "i don't know where that is its from my uncle."

i remember pointing out the small flaws to my manager like the rounded link screws and the Breitling stamp showing through on the inside of the clasp but i agree other than that its nearly flawless especially in the steel quality
as for the links.... take a look yourself. there the normal Breitling kind with the screw on top and a bar running through. unscrew the top and try to push the bar out, it just wouldn't budge for me looks like rust inside but i'm not sure...

this is such a strange coincidence that it makes my brain hurt but it just shows how big RWI is and that this hobby isnt really niche anymore....

oops -sorry, - too many "times" in the names of those places :)

Glad to hear you weren't at the rude place - that wasn't cool. The downstairs place (your guy's place) is def on my preferred place to go in the mall.

Hey, my son said the jeweler angled some sort of long tool, and sort of chiseled them out? Does that make any sense?

Anyway, next time I am in the Mall, I'm going to swing by and say hi -if I can figure out who you are in there :) You guys were having a 50% clearance on Citizen over the Holidays, I think, right? I was tempted, but held on to my wallet :)

Ok, HYD - maybe I'll see you around there sometime. :)

Hey Greg - I was at a family party, and the SOSF was noticed by a guy who showed me his Rolex Rep, we stared talking and he was amazed at the SOSF, especially the weight, when i held his Rollie -his was very light, especially the band. He was pretty impressed with mine. So, it's def a good piece.

This is the best post in a while. What a small world!!!! - LMAO!

So.....who here works at the Swatch store on the Sunset Strip (between the Kodak and Mann)?

I went in there with my kids a couple months ago wearing my SMP 300 and the guy said "nice SMP" (or something like that). I just told him "thanks", but really wanted to say "Hont" because I kinda figured he might be around here.

Anybody??................Anybody??...................

This is the ProII bracelet, right? The kind with two screws per link (one top and one bottom)? If so, did you take out *both* screws before trying to remove the link? You have to take both screws out...
