Okay, so if you paid any attention to this thread a couple of weeks ago:

http://forum.replica-watch.info/vb/showthread.php/watchbuff-experience-45043?highlight=watchbuff

You know that watchbuff is a helicopter pilot in New York who has freely offered rides to any RWI members who go out his way. McGrvy posted photos of his flight when he bought a watch from WB; I figure that I should do the same.

I was sent to New Jersey on an errand to pick up a car that a friend of mine bought on Ebay by mistake (too trigger happy with the bid button), so I decided to invest an evening in a helicopter ride. The trip to the airfield in the vehicle (which I have been affectionately referring to as "The Deathtrap") was already an adventure. The WB experience was definitely more entertaining.

Like McGrvy, I took the tour through the facility (including the men's locker room) and tried out the flight simulator. The flight simulator, incidentally, gives you some idea of how skilled these guys have to be. Because I can assure you that I was a complete and utter failure at it. There were two main hand controls and two foot pedals to balance; WB took over two and let me try to maintain the simulated helicopter in a hover position using just the one remaining control.

I do have fairly significant problems with motion sickness, so the sequence typically went like this: WB maneuvered the helicopter to a hovering position and pointed out something for me to focus on. Helicopter position started to drift and scenery started to move. I tried to counteract the drift, and overcorrected, causing the scenery to suddenly swerve in the other direction. Motion sickness took over so I had to close my eyes and then it was game over. WB was nice enough to grab the controls at this point so we didn't have to crash.

The ride itself was actually much less uncomfortable than the simulator. It's better if the body at least moves when the eyes think it's supposed to move.

Mine was a night time flight--beautiful in real time; awful for pictures. I included some of the less dizzying ones.

Now for the impromptu bad guy chase from the air, I finally realized that still shots were hopeless and finally went to video (still dark but at least not streaky). We did get to see a police car come within inches of taking out civilian vehicle in an intersection, but I didn't get video of that. Did not find the bad guy, but searching for him was still fun:

Just so everyone knows, WB is serious about his invitation to take up anyone who goes out his direction, and he'll take very good care of you. (I didn't even have to buy a watch from him.) He knew that I was worried about airsickness and checked on me often to be sure that I wasn't about to barf in his helicopter. Of course, I made sure to tell him that I was just fine, just in case the alternative was to push me out of the cabin. :)

great post ahw, next time I am in NY I will contact WB.

In the 80th I travelled a lot to the US and I always took a Heli from JFK to Newark airport, it was free when you took TWA business class. One time we took the Heli from JFK and landed on the UN building, took a taxi and went back to JFK to get the connection flight. I also remember that we had to stop in the air next to the twin towers because of traffic before we crossed the river.

Great that you liked it.

Hey all. AHW is really cool and was great to meet. Toekn female award was well deserved!

As for the taxpayers paying for it, thats would be a yes. BUT the tax payers would pay for it even when were empty. So we always try to make the most of the flight by letting other officers and guest VIP's on for a "familiarization" flight. So in short the good citizens of NY pay for it everytime we fly and this was not an unscheduled flight like a charter so no "extra" expense was made. Feeing me on that VDUB?
AHW was a great passenger and fine student but needs to work on her hover work >LOL>.:biglaugh:

AHW has long been one of my favorite members and, I'm proud to say, friend.
Watchbuff has skyrocketed to the top of the heap now as well by consistently proving himself to be a class act and a true gentleman.
Kudos to you, Sir! :notworthy:

And as for VDUB: I don't live in New York, but this is the closest I've actually seen to anyone I know receiving ANY benefit from the volumes of dollars I and others send to our various and sundry governmental bodies... EVER. (military defense not included) And considering the tax rates in NYC, they should give them ALL a ride at least once a year. Just my $0.02. :skeptical:

Hey. Are you suggesting that you were doubting that I was female before this?

Tell you what, I'm game to try that flight simulator again if you let me pretreat with some meclizine first. But honestly, I got less sick in the helicopter than in the simulator. How about you let me copilot the actual thing? :)

hmmmmmm. Maybe some more sim time before you get the co pilot seat.
I never doubted you were
a female but now I know for sure ; )
I get a bit annoyed when I hear " at the tax payers expense". I think ahw is a tax payer as am I.
Since I'm a contracted pilot and part of the drop program technically I have less rules to abide by.
Chances are I would be airborne longer without passengers so in a sense it saved money. I keep pax flights under an hour for comfort.
When I was in the navy I wish I could divulge the waste that went on that I saw.

Wow, even better than the first one! NYK up close at night is a rare sight.

Don't feel bad about not being able to hover AH, I can handle a fixed wing just fine but after hours of pratice in 206s, bell47s etc I can barely hover a damn chopper. I'mm good enough to put one on the ground if I realy had to (which was the purpose of the exersise) but I'm glad I never had to.

Oh, and to the grumbler: If there was anything in the least underhanded about this do you realy think it would be posted here? As WB said, it'sd gotta be in the air anyway and somwhere between 40 and 50 kilos of AHW ain't gunna make an iotas difference to fuel burn on that thing. I know, I may be a crappy pilot but I'm a qualified Load Master.

WB: you guys had any of those little Dragon Fliers to play with yet? I want one!

That's so cool!!!

I did one of the tourist chopper flights over NYC maybe 15 years ago. I was a young boy backpacking around the States, and I remember it was wonderful, but also really quick and expensive. Your experience with WB looks superb... and how kind of him to invite fellow RWI members.

Well, I'm going to be in NY in about three weeks... I'd love to take WB up on that offer too! WB, is the invite for US citizens only or open to overseas visitors too? And how much notice would you need?

This is just great! :)

I can tell you that he didn't get much notice from me. But I don't know--you don't pay taxes in the US. :)

To all, I can definitely recommend this to anyone--you won't regret it.
