So this requires your iphone is jail broken first off.

Next up there's a few essentials u should have like winterboard and such.

assuming u have all that (which anyone w/ a jailbroken iphone should have)

This is a very simple process of installing the .ipa file and using this as ur theme for ur iphone.

This is what a normal iphone / apps look like:
apple-iphone-in-hand-thumb.jpg

Heres my theme I put together
(using alot of other ppls work.. cant take credit for 99% of the design.. just the integration of it all into one theme)

This is the main lock/unlock page.

photo5.jpg

(notice it says "chris" where At&t should be.. just a neat little feature of the
MIM program, you can find it on Cydia)

Next up we have what the lock / unlock screen looks like when its being charged.

photo.jpg

the battery was 83% charged, notice on the right of the double helix some of it was still not coloured. ... I like this double helix battery much more then the standard battery.

Now the first page w/ the first pg icons.

photo4.jpg

the first Icon (top left) is the new tomtom app ($110) from app store..... or free from demonoid (pm me if you'd like a free invite)
Notice the dock w/ the icons at the bottom... compare that to the standard iphone pic again.
apple-iphone-in-hand-thumb.jpg

I like my themes dock better w/ the reflection and such
(again.. I didnt write the code to it so im not taking credit for it)

second page:
photo3.jpg

Now you might be thinking, hey he doesnt have alot of apps..
actually I have 157 apps..

but I use categories available in cydia to organize them all.

here's an example.

look back at the first page, at the bottom right you'll see an icon called "system"
if you click on the system icon it brings you to this page.

photo2.jpg

here is where I keep all my apps I feel are system type files.

The icons w/
("other", "Info", "health", "games", "photo editing" )
are also folders that contain the rest of my apps.
(inside those folders are other sub folders that break down the programs even more
such as in games it gets broken down into board games....card games... puzzles and so on)

also the theme comes w/ all those cool icons,,,, many more then what you see on those few screen shots of the phone

some other things include "sbs settings"
to access it you merely swipe your finger across the top on the screen left to right

photo6-1.jpg

The menu is fully customizable and allows u quick access to some very important
(enable / disable functions)

anyways ...
that concludes my theme + some essential apps you should have if you don't already.

If anyone would like a copy of my theme just pm me or email me
:)

might not be everyone's cup of tea .. but that's what makes customizing the phone so great.. everyone can make it how they would like it to be :)

oh oh i'll have to check that out..

do you have a link by any chance ?

..

(also looks like I edited out part of the word "SSH"
.. its essential for ppl who want to get into the system files of their iphones, very easy to ssh into your phone and play around, installing themes and making ur own !)

you'll need to DL WinSCP or an equivalent prog.
and "open ssh" which can be found in cydia

your SBS settings will auto install the ability to enable / disable ssh
.. now you can wireless get into all your system files !

Jailbreaking is not illegal, no matter how bad Apple wants it to be. It sounds ominous, but all you're doing is gaining root access on a device you own.

Though.... what I do w/ my phone, since its jailbroken prob is illegal
^_^

mixed feelings about it though, for small apps I dont mind paying since it does to a developer who can then work to make the app even better.
for a bigger app like the tomtom app which is something around $110 .. I have no problems dling it for free w/ out thinking twice.

kinda a hypocritical point of view and a double edged sword, screwing over tomtom = screwing over me when they run out of budget.. but as a college kid.. my conscience isnt supposed to be all that clean

You know, there's probably enough iPhone modders here to make an RWI theme. :) I have theme experience as well, and just like he said - I mostly just mod what someone else has already done; I don't have the know-how to be totally original!

Whadda ya say Seventh? Interested?

I'd like to see a poll here on how many members are iPhone users, especially jailbroken users.

I think it might be fun. Now, having said all that and pretty much volunteered myself, if you're not interested feel free to tell me to shove off. :D

As the FNG here I don't want to step on anyone's toes.

Cheers!

ha I was actually thinking of making a RWI type theme
:)

eks might be interested in helping out .. he's really good w/ graphics.
i'll shoot him a pm.

I was going to see what could be done to put together a quick rwi type app.
But .. the next week or so is going to be pretty hectic for me (getting my stuff and going back up the school)

but after that Im all good to work on a theme or app w/ u
:)

That looks awesome! Nice!!

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to the iPhone... What are the downsides of jail-breaking it? Does that mean that you can't access the normal app store any more and you can't update the iPhone with the official updates?

Probably a stupid question to those of you who are much more familiar than me with the device.

when u jailbreak the phone it bypasses any "lock" that has been put on the phone.
essentially it allows you to install 3rd party apps that apple doesn't approve or have in the app store.

the only downside is when a new release comes out you have to wait 3-5 days for a "jailbreak patch" to come out before you can upgrade. (really don't mind this at all.. phone still works perfectly fine while your waiting for a new patch before upgrading)

other then that - all you have to do is click 1 app (appbackup)
which will save everything to your comp, do the update from apple, jailbreak the phone again w/ the given patch and then via itunes sync the phone and all your progs including the jailbroken ones will go back to the phone. ... whole process takes 5-10 min.

so other then that minor inconvenience every few months .. jailbreaking the iphone is well..

i'll put it this way.. a non jailbroken iphone to me is a waste of money !!
the things you can do w/ the jailbroken phone really allow you to customize it and take advantage of everything out there.

oh and yes you can still access the app store, everything is the exact same as it was pre jailbreak.. only now you have cydia which is a "portal" to many other 3rd party developers where you can dl even more
:)

Here is another Noob Iphone question. So you can jailbreak it and switch back to the original theme? If that is true I might have to talk to the boss and get an iphone. Although I will always be a crackberry addict :D .

Yes sir! A co-worker of mine has a company-issued iPhone so he was concerned about someone being able to spot it as jailbroken. No themes, SBSettings with Categories in the SBS dock, means the phone looks 100% "stock" unless you know how to find stuff. :) I suppose you could see similarities between this and a rep. :D

+ when you need to return the phone or send it to tech support ..

all you need to do is back up your iphone (again w/. app backup)
then go to itunes and click restore.

the phone will be unjailbroken and be 100% back to normal ... just like that .. it really is that easy.

once it comes back from tech support or what ever - you just go to the file where you backed everything up when it was jailbroken - re-jailbreak the phone and load everything back on.

:)

Just to clarify a little bit here.

Jailbreaking, like Anopsis says, is just gaining root access on your device. It's currently not illegal (although Apple's lawyers are busy trying to change that). This allows you to install 3rd party applications that Apple does not necessarily approve of (theme changers, data tethering programs, emulators, etc.). These are mostly free apps and usually installed through applications installed during the jailbreaking process like "Cydia" or "Icy". These programs may or may not violate your terms of service with your cell provider, but it would take a pretty good argument to convince me that it is in any way "criminal". I signed no contract when I bought my phone, so how I choose to modify it should be my business.

Jailbreaking also allows you to install "cracked" pay apps you would typically find at the itunes store. This, depending on your country is most likely defined as "piracy" and is what seventhexile is referring to with his TomTom comment above.

This is all stated from my USA viewpoint, your laws may vary.
