Furthermore, I am not an animal activist... I grew up hunting deer, wild turkey and other small animals. I see no problem with killing for food or for sport. But torturing, brutalizing and killing animals OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again just because you dont think you will get caught it just stupid.
I am truly convinced that if it were not found out that he was doing this, he would still be doing it today. It speaks to his moral character, not just his athletic ability.

Did you say something, CBR? I was staring at your avatar... Damn, those abs...

Oh, yeah. +1.

CBR,

I understand that what he did was wrong, brutal, inhuman, what have you. But what makes you more qualified than Roger Goodell to make the decision to bring back a talented player to the NFL. I understand that the fans pay their salaries, so if you don't like it, do like hundreds of Eagles fans did, and sell your tickets to someone who comes to a game to watch the glory of everything that is pro football.

Let's also not lose sight that Vick did his time. He served his punishment. He payed his debt to society. Vick served 23 months in prison, longest sentence ever served for this crime. They made and example of him. Not to mention he lost ALL of his money and endorsements, and became a broken man. Now the guy does volunteer work for the ASPCA and has apologized to everyone countless amounts of times. All he wants to do now is now is play pro football and get his life back in order. He has done everything right since his hearing and is just asking for a second chance at the life he had. There were many teams who turned him down or wouldn't even give the man a chance because of the baggage. The Eagles decided to give the guy a second chance, and you know what? good for them! They are giving a man a second chance at his life and made a great pick up in the process.

Is this negative attention on a football team any worse than whatever team Terrell Owens is on? I don't think so. Is this negative attention any worse than the head coach of the Raiders punching his defensive coordinator? I don't think so. Is this negative attention any worse than Plexico Burres shooting himself in the leg? I don't think so. Is this negative attention any worse than Donte Stallworth killing someone while drunk driving? I don't think so. Is this negative attention any worse than Chad Johnson changing his last name to Ocho Cinco? I don't think so.

Look, I am not defending the guy's actions here, in my eyes what he did was inexcusable and if I saw that I would have killed him myself. All I am saying is you can't let someone's off field actions take away from the greatest sport on earth. You and everyone else who lets this happen; sells their season tickets because of one man, or denounces their lifelong loyalty to their favorite team because of one man; is hurting this magical game more than Vick did by coming back. And maybe, just maybe, Vick is rehabilitated and has an excellent career in the NFL and continues his good work with the ASPCA (we wouldn't want that now would we )

As for not being able to sell out games, there are only one or two teams that will have this problem this year. It is their fault for not producing an exciting team to watch this year, not because of the economy.

I hope this didn't come off as a flame CBR, just trying to have a good conversation is all.

DonDrizzle, no offense taken at all... I respect your opinion.
I respectfully disagree with your opinion, but thats just the way it goes.
As I said before, if it were up to me this would not even be a conversation because there would be NO NFL, NO MLB, NO NBA...

You forgot: Ray Lewis - charged with Murder and Aggravated assault- plead guilty to obstruction of justice and served 1 year of probation and 1000 hours of community service - was able to turn the corner on his legal troubles and rehabilitate his career. Leonard Lewis was charged with DUI manslaughter and spent 90 days in jail after he killed another driver while driving drunk. No one protests him and no one was outraged when he was allowed to resume his career. Oh, I forgot, they killed HUMANS. Please don't get me wrong, what Vick did was horrible...but what does he have to do to get on with his life....and by no means am a Vick fan... I am a loyal fan of the NY Football Giants!

I respect your opinion, too, sir. It's what makes freedom of speech so terrific.

No pro sports?

Loss of state income. Loss of town, city, and state pride. Loss of millions of jobs. Loss of children's dreams.

Don't forget that their are good stories in the NFL and other pro sports as well. Take Michael Oher on the glorious Baltimore Ravens, for example. Everyone should already know his story, I mean they made a movie about him already.

Now if there was a rule in pro sports where it says "No criminal record", I would be in the same boat as you.

There are people playing in the MLB from the Dominican and Cuba that are outlaws in their countries for crimes they committed in their countries.

If the NFL were in a country where dog fighting is legal, we wouldn't even be having this conversation either.

I am not a Vick fan, and I am upset now that he's going back into the Madden games because I really hate him there. However I concur with those who are saying what he did doesn't matter in relation to football. He did something that I along with most others do not agree with, but at one point it was culturally acceptable and in many places it still is. People seem to care more about animals than they do about humans because we tend to view them as innocents. I do this myself, but nature treats them with just as much if not more brutality.

My feelings concerning professional athletics is a result of their ridiculous salaries. Since most of these clowns really have no other talent (not all... but most) why do they get to demand higher and higher salaries. CAP THAT SHIT at about $250k per year and see how many of these superstars stick around.
When police departments are laying officers off, fire departments are closing down, health care providers cant provide decent care and my kids cant get a decent public education because band programs and art programs have to be canceled........ BUT John Q. Quarterback can earn $40m this year, there is something seriously wrong!

I would have NO PROBLEM AT ALL if athletes were paid reasonably. With my background and education if I had a felony conviction I would be standing in the soup line with my sons trying to get dinner... I just dont think its right. 40 US troops died in Afghanistan last month, and another 30 this month (my brother has been in Afghanistan for nearly 3 months now). I bet no one (besides their families) know their names ( I DO, I KNOW EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEIR NAMES and they scroll across my computer screen when the screen saver comes on). YET Michael Vick will have his name on 10 billion football jerseys this year. Am I bitter, yeah probably!

Im sorry to R2 for derailing his thread... I have made this about something that it was not intended. But there are few things in life that I am passionate about any more, and this happens to be one of them.

Salary caps is a whole different issue, and I agree 1 million percent with you there.

Salary caps? Alrighty...who gets the money? I mean...The owners are not going to drop the price of the tickets for you...So...Who is going to get the money once the players are capped? Good God people.
Oh BTW, Vick is a POS... who IMO should be burned at the stake. But he did his time, and has a right to make a living. If some moron is willing to pay him, shame on him.

They can demand higher and higher salaries because unlike most of us, they have a specialized skill. They can run fast, jump high or elude 11 other men trying to catch them. Collectively professional athletes are a handful of people IN THE WORLD that can do what they do. No matter how much education we (us normal folks) have, no matter what we do, no matter how important we think we are to a particular company, job, skill...etc, we all can be replaced. There is someone else that can do our job equally as well or better (probably in the same city).

Owners will pay exorbitant amounts for that specialized skill because they know the public will pay exorbitant amounts to witness those specialized skills in action.

As the uncle of a soldier in the military and the brother of a military officer, do I think it is right, HELL NO. But most sports fans that are disgusted by Vick, will either tune in to watch the freak show or pay to go through turn styles to watch him in person...thereby perpetuating the problem.

I will bet you Ocho Cinco can't show up in an ambulance at 2:30 in the morning and save someone's life from a bullet in the lung.

That is a specialized skill that not everyone can do or even handle the situation. They get paid dirt next to Ocho Cinco.

Agreed. But there are others that can and they are just as skillful. There isn't one other person (not already signed to an NFL contract) that can catch the ball and run like ocho cinco (the clown that he is).

Should an emergency tech (teacher/doctor/plumber/mechanic/soldier...etc) be paid MORE than a pro athlete, absolutely. But there is no one paying to watch any of them because any of us can be trained to do those things. We can't be trained to dunk, intercept a pass or throw 70 yards down the field effortlessly at a high level while on the field, court or ice with players with comparable skill levels.
