Hey guys, Ok this is a bit more serious now. My Gran passed away in Jan  and left me some money. I might want to spend 2-2500 on a gen.

Firstly, im going to take my time over this because i cant get it wrong! doesn't matter so much with a $200 rep but this i have to get right.

Ive no idea what i would like or whether to buy second hand or brand new. Ideally i want it to hold its value quite well.

Genrally speaking i like rolex and breitling, other than that ive no idea.

(only like sport rolex models)

ANY suggestions most welcome. :D

A Brietling Seawolf can be purchased for the amount you have. I have a rep and love it.

hi,
i've looking at 2nd hand rolie all day because i have nothing to do at work....

on the European market you can have this :
explorer for less than 3000€ (unfortunatly $ is low so not good conversion)
http://www.collection-heure.be/fr/Montr ... orer-i.rvb
http://www.montre-de-luxe.fr/boutique/r ... -114270-4/

you can get a vintage breitling for 1750€
http://www.collection-heure.be/fr/Montr ... intage.rvb

a sub for 2900€
http://www.montre-de-luxe.fr/boutique/r ... e-14060-2/

explorer II for 3000€
http://www.montre-de-luxe.fr/boutique/r ... -explorer/

a chronomat for 1700€
http://www.montre-de-luxe.fr/boutique/b ... er-b13050/

a breitling navi timer for 2600€
http://www.montre-de-luxe.fr/boutique/b ... er-d13322/

after seeing this, i'm totally going for a second hand explorer (maybe a vintage one) (of course it'll be when i could to afford one)

Thanks guys :D all great advice, keep it coming. Im leaning more towards breitling than rolex as you seem to get more for your money.

Hiya not wanting to advise on what you personaly want i wondered if you'd seen this website for a UK based seller. Seems good prices I use for the great gen pictures for evaluating the accuracy of rep's. Bit of a drive from North of the border down to Hull though.

If I may give you a slice of financial advice.. don't buy anything... ???

If you had your heart set on something particular, and that desire withstood the test of time and then you stumbled into the money, it would be a perfectly logical thing to do.

Buying something simply for the sake of ridding yourself of that nasty $2.5K burning a hole in your pocket... doesn't seem like a good reason to drop that much money on something you don't know if you want or not.

I advise most of my clients who inherit small (non-life-altering, but not insignifcant) sums of money "Don't buy anything except those things that you wanted/needed but didn't have the money to buy a year ago... if you still want/need them today you probably won't regret buying them a month from now."

70% don't listen to me, and 95% of the 70% who didn't listen eventually admit that I was right.

That said, if you're set on buying... Rolex holds as much residual value as any watch you can buy.

Omega, Breitling or Tag. All are very nice gens for the money you have to spend. On WUS, they have a seller who has the new black bond for sale. I believe it is 2000 USD. Keep an eye out. Narrow your choices.

Here it is on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0361717339 Same guy btw. He is Canadian.

GL, have fun.

lol i'm so stupid
i've been several times to UK and even worked there 3months , i must be tired to writte that ^^

£ is stronger than € you may be interested to buy here in France (one of the web site is Belgium).

for example i have noticed that older Rolex explorer 1 may be more expensive than younger one (depend of the year) and a 2006 explorer is worth 3000€ whereas an 1976 one is still worth 2700€. it appears you don't loose money with time.

same applie with sub, 20 years old ones are 10 to 15% cheaper than 3 years old ones.

so for the futur i would advise anyone to buy a limited edition (if affordable) : i'm sure the omega appolo 11 ( 4000€ or 40000 € depend model) will be collector in 10 years for the 50th aniversary and in 60years for the century they may be very very expensive.

just my opinion

Well... choose the right watch. I have been observing the value of second hand/preowned Omega Seamaster Pro pricing for quite some time. The best period to get this watch was last year but with slight price increase, it's still a good watch to buy second hand.

Many are available so you won't have a hard time finding it. Avoid mid size version, the value is not as good as the full size version.

Another watch worth considering is the Ebel 1911 BTR. You can get so much discount on brand new piece. It's over your budget but I believe at 3k USD brand new, it's the piece you can't go wrong. It has almost the same movement as the much more expensive Breguet Chronograph. Selling price will be the same as whatever you paid now. I have seen preowned piece on the bay for more than that 3k USD.

From what I'm seeing on WUS and TZ, used gens are quite the bargain at the moment. Personally I'd be looking at Breitling Seawolf or Skyland, Omega PO and Tag Carrera Day-Date, all of which can be had for your budget right now.

What about an Omega moon watch, or something like that, and you keep the change in the bank or spend it on a few reps? It's just a thought.

I was in an AD yesterday and was listening to a customer. He said he really wanted to buy a Tag Heuer because they are great investments.

Now FM is that your sarcastic sense of humour????
After watching that video from the luxury channel the other day I thought it was pretty much hit and miss with New Gens as to what would increase in value. Your better off buying secondhand and taking it from there aren't you?
I'm not in the Gen Owners league but it would seem to me that whatever luxury item you buy it should be done because you like it not because you hope it will increase in value....
cheers

In general, you're right. There are certain watches that are regarded as safe investments (and they will likely appreciate), but with a few exceptions, you're talking about major money. Watches like Patek Phillipe, Breguet, and Vacheron Constantin will all likely hold their value. Well, at least they were holding their value up until this last year. With the economy, who knows? But these watches are also tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars.

If you're looking for a watch as an investment alone, then I would look somewhere else. If you buy a new watch, it'll be like buying a new car. It will take a significant depreciation hit the minute you walk out the door of the store.

With the economy, you can get good deals on some used watches, but you have to be somewhat careful. Do NOT buy a used watch without papers. You may end up with a Watcheden special.

For the money you're looking to spend, I would say your safest bet (purely from a financial perspective) would be a used Rolex. Rolex watches will depreciate, but at a lower rate than other watches (Omega, in particular, have been really up and down in terms of value-- the scandals associated with Omega buying many of their own watches in the big Omegamania auction a year or so ago are still having a negative impact on the resale of Omegas). If you can find a used Submariner, for around $3000, that's a pretty good deal. And my guess is that since the new model is being rolled out this year and next, you'll be able to get pretty good deals on the older styles. Same with the GMT II.
