how does one know when the GMT hand is working like an independently adjustable one and not just adjustable?

I have a GMT one that is adjsutable IF you change the time as well!!! (bugger)

eg http://www.timeshops.net/PA6606_-_Paner ... 011-14.htm

says adjustable...

is there a way of telling from the movement? for example?

thanks

When you can adjust the hand independent of the time in the second position. Sorry I don't know how else to say it.

Uh I can't see your watch but no that's not what I said. It's such an obvious thing there is no other way to say it. I gave you the setting position. You can either adjust it or you can't. That's how you know.

this thread is so confusing... i believe its easier to explain slaved versus independent.

SLAVED
The difference is the 24 hr hand synchronized with the Mercedes Hand.. So if you set the 24 hr hand to 2200 hrs, the Mercedes hand goes along for the ride and shows 10:00 o'clock etc..

INDEPENDENT (what you have)
So when you set the 24 hr hand at 2200hrs, the Mercedes hand may show 10:00, or it may not, but you can set it to show whatever timezone you want.

your right fakey that is really hard to explain and i might have just confused myself.

correct me if Im wrong, but its awfully hard to set the hands of a watch unless you have the watch in your hands

what im asking is if Im considering buyind a watch, and it says "adjustable GMT hand" how do I determine if its truly adjustable, or just moves with the hour hand

thanks

The ad as you said states it's adjustable. If you don't think they're the dealer is telling the truth then...well that's another thread. Why don't you email them and ask? They would be the best ones to answer the question.

the one I tried to adjust, when you pull the crown out to the second position, then you can adjust the hour hand and the GMT hand - but they move at the same time (the GMT hand at 1/2 the speed of the hour hand) so you can either set the GMT hand where you want it OR the hour hand, not both independently of one another.

once set, the gmt hand does 1 revolution every 24 hours.

so it seems that although the GMT hand is "adjustable", its not terribly useful.

which movements allow for a gmt hand to set indepedently of the hour hand? or does this question not really make sense because the answer is "depends" ! (which Im guessing it is! doh!)

thanks

If you're adjusting the time then you're in the third position not the second. It will always be slaved with the time in the third.

First Position: Wind

Second Position: Date

Third Position: Time

If the hand is independent then in the second position the date will change when you wind it forward and the GMT will change when you wind it backward. If the date changes when it winds backward then it's slaved.

yes, the hour hand on a sports rolex looks similar to a benz emblem. i have heard people call it that for as long as i can remember. it's just a slang term.
