After reading about LOS eating some pig ear bone with pasta, I felt prompted to ask everyone what is the strangest food you have ever tried???

I've always thought since we have international members, a food section with homemade recipes from around the world would be fun....anyway what's the craziest food you've tasted??

In a Causal Loop
I have eaten rattlesnake on a couple of occasions. Pretty much tasted like chicken to me. In fact the first time I ate it, I was told it was chicken, initially.

Guinea pig is strange because it's a rodent, but it's damn good. Tastes better than a roast pork. That's probably the strangest thing I've eaten. I'm also a big fan of all types of offal like liver, kidney, brains, sweetbreads, heart and intestines.

Brazil has alot of exotic food (not strange), but most of them are saucery stuff... like "dendê oil" used to make some typical food from my hometown, and there´s alot of other recipes that use it, in a mix of african and brazilian culture...

For example:
- Acarajé:
...is a dish found in Nigerian and Brazilian cuisine. It is traditionally encountered in Brazil's northeastern state of Bahia, especially in the city of Salvador, often as street food, and is also found in most parts of Nigeria and Ghana

It is made from peeled black-eyed peas formed into a ball and then deep-fried in dendê (palm oil). It is served split in half and then stuffed with vatapá and caruru – spicy pastes made from shrimp, cashews, palm oil and other ingredients. A vegetarian version is typically served with hot peppers and green tomatoes. In Nigeria, it is commonly eaten for breakfast with gruel made from millet.

- Sarapatel:
Sarapatel, also called Sorpotel, is a dish of Portuguese origin now commonly cooked in Goa, India and northeastern Brazil. Ingredients include meat and offal, which varies depending on region from pork to lamb and even beef. The meats are first parboiled, then diced and sauteed before being cooked in a spicy and vinegary sauce.
Here in Brazil it´s made out of pork. Heart, intestines, tripes, livers, visceras... etc, cooked on pork´s blood. It´s strong and delicious..But better watch out where you eat this..

Spirit those dishes look really good, although I just finished eating. :D

Octopus and Squid are really common to me, as well as Crabs and other seafood. (My hometown is a coastal shoreline city...so, seafood is just basic there :)

But, octopus and squid are mainly eaten by me in the japanese cuisine.
I didn´t mention any of the japanese food here ´cause I thought it was already too common for most of us..But, as a Japan lover (and japanese women lover) I eat alot of japanese stuff, and I´m always searching for something new to try on the japanese cuisine.

So, sushi, sashimi, mushrooms, and all other kinds of food are on my paladar very often too (my gf is jap)
For octopus, what I like to go out and eat on weekends, I could tell about...

- TakoYaki:
Takoyaki (???? or ??) (literally fried or baked octopus) is a popular Japanese dumpling made of batter, diced or whole baby octopus, tempura scraps (tenkasu), pickled ginger, and green onion, topped with okonomiyaki sauce, green laver (aonori), mayonnaise, and katsuobushi (fish shavings), first popularized in Taisho-era Osaka. There is a similarly named dish called ikayaki but it is a broiled whole squid and bears no resemblance. Yaki is derived from "yaku" (??) which simply means "to bake or grill" in Japanese, and can be found in the names of other Japanese cuisine items such as teriyaki or sukiyaki.

Octopus for the Takoyaki (I just love octopus, no matter how it´s served..)

There are so much I love from and about the Japanese culture, that I would have to type a "Spiritpedia" about it here...so, I´m gonna take it easy

Cheers,
Spirit.

How would one tenderize that anyway, in a crockpot? Seems it would be all grissel and muscley.

Spirit you are making me hungry again. :D

I was in this restaurant a few years ago where I ordered the dish of the day, not knowing what it was. Anyway, it came out, looked a bit like meatballs, and very tasty. Anyway, I asked the waiter what it was, and he said bull testicles. Was a bit grossed out, but none the less, found it so good i went back the next night for another serve. And the following night. However, when i went back the fourth night, the balls were not nearly as large as they had been, but i dug in anyway. Later I asked the waiter why tonights were much smaller, and he just said 'sometimes the man wins, sometimes the bull wins'. I don't eat there any more.

On a serious note, I had roo-chos last night - nachos with kangaroo mince.

LOL great post!

"strangest" food I've eaten (but not necessarily strange to the locals)

Llama
Alpaca
Ostrich
Guinea pig
Pidgeon
chickens feet
pigs/tail/trotters

had quite a lot of raw tuna steaks and sushi, also fish eyes! & roe - but i dont consider seafood to be strange

had delicious vegetarian meals during a brief stay in a Japanese Buddhist monastery - i dont normally rate veggie food, but this stuff was mind blowing! :D

In terms of strong flavours:
broths made up of pig or cows tongues/tails
liver in meat or soup form

hmmmm....i'm starved now :|
