Reasonable cost for servicing?

Hello all,

I have found a local watchmaker who is willing to service a rep Breitling.

However he charges $350-$450 minimum for this work.

Is this realistic? Would anyone know a less costly watchmaker (ideally in Canada)?

Thank you for your advice...

I have heard that a lot of watchmakers won't work on reps, and so those that do can charge a premium for their services (and by "charge a premium" the actual quote I got was "charge up the wazoo"). Having said that, the quotes you got sound pretty high to me, so I'd think it'd be worth shopping around. And if you need direction from the Canadian members, might want to narrow down your area a little.

Good luck. :)

Thank you. I live in the Toronto area, but I suppose I could send the watch easily to any part of Canada.

Anyone would have any recommendation to where to turn? The quote by the way I got was from a watchmaker in Port Credit.

Have paid anywhere between 100 and 200 bucks in the past, depending on the movement and the service provider.

It is a 7750 movement.

Now the question is: how do I find a more reasonable watchmaker in the Toronto area? Any ideas anyone?

I have called 4: 3 said no, the 4th gave me the very high price (after telling me that rep movements are crap anyway)

No seriously, my fiddy was dead for unknown reason, and i told the watchmaker to fix it. He's an expert in antique watches.

He told me to pay $5 ( $1 = Rp 10.000), and it's working smoothly ever since :)

Nice one. I think here we're talking about a full service though, not a fix-her-upper.

My watchmaker takes 60 Euro for standart ETA movement and 90 Euro for A7750. This is for a complete serivce which means cleaning, oiling and timing it on a timing machine. This is in EU. Let me know if you want more info on it.

Wow. That is a very fair price. Would he be willing to do this for someone who is in Canada (of course shipping would be extra)?

I hope I can find someone local with similar prices...

I sent my Gen Omega SMP for service and it ran 180.00. It was fully disassembled, cleaned, new reversing wheel, lubed, timed and returned in perfect order. My guy is in Chicago but I don't know if he does reps. Since I have never had a face to face conversation, I have never asked. Considering Rolex charges 450-650 for a full service I think your watch maker is smoking a reefer. Start another thread titled, "WatchMakers in Canada?" and see if you get any replies. Also contact Legendofspeed and ask him how to get in touch with a man code named/nic "Ziggy". He may or may not be able to take your watch, I don't know but he is rep friendly and Canadian.

Ziggy is the MAN for Canadians, best guy for services and reluming.Heis no 1. Ziggy is in Canada but not taking any new customers. I tried. But go ahead and try it, maybe you are lucky.
