A word about USPS Priority Mail International...

This is meant to be a public service announcement about the United States Postal Services Priority Mail International service.
Contrary to popular belief, and contrary to the information provided by most USPS employees... The customs declaration number CANNOT be trusted as a means by which to track a packages progress. YES, most of the time it will show that the package has been shipped, that it has cleared customs, and when it was delivered. BUT do not rely on this information as a means by which to lay blame on a seller for not shipping something.

As an example... nearly three weeks ago I sold a watch to a fine chap in the UK. He paid via Paypal and I immediately created a shipping label through Paypal. The watch was at the post office within hours of the payment being received. I handed the package to the same little woman who almost always takes my packages from me.

After three days, the buyer asked if the package had been shipped because the tracking information simply stated that I had notified the USPS to expect the package. Several more days go by, and still no change at all. I go in to the post office and explain to the manager what is going on and he nearly argues with me that if I had given the package to a teller, it would have been scanned and would show as accepted. We go talk to the teller, and she specifically remembers the package because she thought it was rather heavy for such a small package. He then retracts his statement and says, well its not really a tracking number anyway.........

A few more days go by and still no change. At this point Im waiting for the buyer to throw a fit and accuse me of trying to scam him (happened to me last year). But instead he is extremely understanding and agrees that sometimes these things take time. In the mean time I had occasion to be back at the post office, and the teller asked if the package had ever showed up and I have to say that it hasnt. She is very apologetic and says she wishes she could be of some help. But since the package was declared as $50 in watch parts it would not be insured for more.

Well Friday I get an email from the buyer stating that he received a notice from his postal service stating that customs had declared that a fee was due for a package arriving from the US. He had a couple packages he was expecting, and we were unsure as to if THIS was the package I had sent. I think I have been uneasy all weekend wondering if this was the watch I had shipped.

Today he writes to say that the watch arrived in good shape and that he was pleased with it. GUESS WHAT???? The tracking still shows that Ive never shipped the watch and that I have only paid for postage.

SO, it was not scanned when handed over to the teller. It was not scanned at the US sort facility. It was not scanned at the outgoing customs office. It was not scanned at the UK customs office (but they applied a tax to the package???) and it was not scanned by the delivering postal service.

WOW, thanks guys...I appreciate all the hard work and effort. You must be taking lessons from the California Department of Motor Vehicles!

The moral of the story is... Just because the tracking shows no progress doesnt mean that it isnt being moved through the system. AND, good things happen to good people (the buyer, not me...) Thank you Rooster for your understanding and patience!

Very informative and not entirely unexpected (the UK equivalent does similar things at times).

Thanks for the heads-up CBR!

I've had USPS packages sent to me to Canada and they have been tracked in both the USPS and Canada Post websites with the exact same information.

I think the problem lies in the initial entry of the tracking number. I think it has to be registered into their computers initially in order for future updates to be entered. If the initial entry log has not been made, then anyone making future entries will most likely encounter a "entry not valid" or "entry not found" code or something like that, and the person who tries to make an entry who receives such a code will probably go "mehhhhh,,,, " and then move on to the next package.

As to it not really being a tracking number?????? maybe this was his way of saying "it doesn't really make a difference anyways" so there's no point in complaining.???

just my 2 cents.

If you send it express then you can track it all the way.

Sure, it could be sent USPS Express mail international... I guess I would do that next time and pass the cost on to the buyer.

I had a package recently from Royal Mail. When I checked the status, all it said that it was given to the overseas department for posting...which was exactly what the USPS website stated. A week later, my watch hits the States, and it still says the same thing. I got my watch, of course, but it was like hitting a dinosaur in the arse and waiting for the reaction days later.

Well, I'm glad things worked out. The problem with these BS tracking numbers is that they can actually create trouble rather than add value. The code never said the package was even posted. It just said the PO was notified that the label was created, or something like that. Now, if there was no tracking at all, the buyer would just happily wait and see. Instead, with these useless numbers buyers and sellers keep hitting the refresh button, nothing comes up, and they start worrying... If they're going to have barcodes, then they should use them. Otherwise they shouldn't provide that facility at all and buyers and sellers will just relax and do like they used to do in the old days... they just wait patiently.

I have similar experience with the US post, tracking is simply not reliable or non existant. Thankfully the two times I used it overseas, the package arrived saftely.

The problem is not with the USPS or RP or whatever they are all called. If you send it anything other than express the tracking number will only be good to the border. The reason is because the PO has no vested interest in the package. When sent express however you are talking about a package that has insurance built in with a guaranteed delivery date. So the PO has arrangements with the other POs for systems that track them all the way to their destination. The criteria is listed on the USPS website. The same goes for any international parcel coming in. When a dealer dropships to you they are sending it express. Actually they usee shipping services over there. But it has a tracking number and insurance on it. if it gets lost they get their money back. That's why they are able to resend at no cost.

This one wasn't even good to the border. It never even said that the parcel was posted. That's why I can see how this could lead to problems for a seller, who can't even prove the watch was mailed.
