would you finance a gen if you really wanted one?

the reason i ask is because my cousin really wanted a watch he got. a breitling superocean. looks really nice, blue dial and all the bells ans whistles a new watch comes with. but theyre not too expensive. i think he bought his for like 3,000usd. and hes making payments on it.... kinda extreme for a watch, but if you really want it, then you want it...

so would anyone else go to that extreme and make monthly payments for a gen? or maybe save up and just buy it?

i was thinking of buying a rep superocean and showing it to him :)

Hell no. There is only one thing you might should ever finance and that's a house.

Anyone's lifestyle is their business. We all have different priorities in life, and are lucky enough to be able to make our own choices. People finance all sorts of things, and if they've done the math and they can do it, then be my guest. If they dig a hole for themselves while doing that, that's a different story, and they only have themselves to blame. So yeah, I'm happy for your friend if he's happy!

A car is nothing more than something to get you back and forth to work. You don't NEED to spend 20k to get a good car that is dependable. I have a 1999 Crown Vic with 30,000 miles on it. Paid $2500 for it. Costs nothing to insure. People spend that kind of money because they want something new or for vanity. If someone ran a shopping cart into your car you'd freak out. I couldn't give a shit.

If the case you have is the thicker one yes it will work.

Some years ago I put a gen rolex on a credit card because I wanted the watch so bad (It was almost triple the price of the watch your cousin bought). As I look back on that purchase, I cringe. It was too much and if I couldn't pay for it outright I should'nt have bought it. But you live and learn. That is why I appreciate reps so much. When you purchase reps you get the excitement of a new watch (which will be very comparable to its gen counterpart) but at a fraction of the cost.

I have since bought a couple more reasonably priced gen tag heuers BUT I PAID CASH for them (one for me one was a gift).

Take my advice and either pay cash or better yet, get the same satisfaction from a rep of the gen you want.

I still don't see the allure of buying a gen.

I have a rep that's 99.6% similar to the gen for 99.6% less then the gen.

That .4% does not warrant an extra 4 or 5 thousand. IMHO ..

Save your $$ and buy whatever you want once you've got the dough, without stress, guilt, or the possibility of default.

Simple, really.

NO - never buy luxury or "wish list" items on credit. If you can't COMFORTABLY pay for it, you don't need it.
I whole-heartedly agree with Fakey, except I did actally take advantage of very low financing on my recent car purchase because the rate was so low. Other than that, I owe on my house.
As for the jeweler offering 0% - he is selling the note at a discount to a finance company. Talk to someone higher up in management and you can probably buy the watch for CASH at or near the discount rate they will get for the note. Take the discount, not the "free money".

Will never buy a gen watch more than $1.2k.
As what many mention, a rep is more than good enough with 98%

there's a great dichotomy between owning a gen and owning a rep that's 99% gen.

I posed this Q several months ago, and some of the responses I got back was that you will always have in the back of your mind that you are owning a fake and it will never be a real deal. That will bug you and haunt you eventually, everytime you look at your watch on your wrist. (well, maybe not "haunt" you, but you get the jist).

Others said, 99% is good enough.

The problem with the equation in this market is that the watch is worth fair less than $3k... I know of two friends who have purchased SOH's for about $1,700 that were in practically new condition...

I recently purchased a Panerai 000J that was still under factory warranty and look new with all boxes and papers for $3,100... it sold brand new for $5,500 plus tax...

I also recently purchased a Omega Planet Ocean that was less than a 2 months old for $1,900... it had the receipt and tags showing the $3,600 plus tax price...

I would not buy a new watch right now.... too many people are selling less than 1 year old watches for 40-60% off the new price...

I would not do it, and as of know I would not buy expansive gens.

And here you also can see that Fakey is not making a lot of profit on his watches :D

+1 Exactly my thoughts.

...MAYBE a car, if you really need one.. but then only finance a very cheap beater car until you have the cash to buy something nicer. A car is a luxury with rapidly depreciating value; downright stupid to finance one in most cases. If you have only $2k cash to put toward a car, buy a $2k car, don't put $2k down payment on a $20k car!
