OK, all you experts. Another newbie question for you--and thanks so much for the great advice you gave to my previous question about Bell & Ross. It appears that the watch I want is one of the 42mm 'Instrument' series. I wanted one with a Swiss ETA movement but have so far struck out. It appears that they all come with Asian 4813 (28,000 bph) (whatever the heck the 28,000 bph is!). My question is simply how that movement compares to the Swiss one. I'm hoping to wear the watch on a regualr basis and to have it reliable. I keep reading that the Asian movement is not as good--but then some people have suggested that they are 'getting close'. I'd be grateful for some opinions/solutions. Perhaps I'm concnerned over nothing...... Cheers, All.

I have heard the higher the BPM's the better. Meaning smoother second and movement. Yes/no???????

I to would like to would like to know more about the Asian 4813. I just picked up a 42mm B&R w/blue lume. When I first got it I noticed sometimes it would stop, but if I manually wind it every so oftern it will run for hours and keep perfect time. I can hear the rotor spinning freely. So far it keeps perfect time and hasn't stopped running, just hand wind it once in awhile.

Thanks

I have had a few of these and taken them apart. It is basically a Chinese overclocked 21,600 movement. The architecture is not really designed for it. You can buy them for less than a 21J.

I got flamed on RWG for pointing this out. So there must be somethin to it eh?

Can ya explain "overclocked"? Short life span?

Overclocked: Running faster than it was designed to. If your car is designed to idle at 300 RPM and you turn it up so it is idling at 2300 RPM could that shorten your engines life. I'll leave that up to the automotive experts.

then what about the servicing or how easy it is to change the movement?

They dont get serviced... They get thrown away and replaced for about $30.

I've got a B&R with a 4813 28,8 movement and it is choppy. I don't have any other 4813 movements to compare it with but i do have 2813 movements and some appear smoother than the B&R. weird, i know....

Not what I expected out of a 28,8

I don't have any sophisticated measuring equipment to see if it really is 8bps, and i can't count that fast.

My camera can't do 1 sec exposures either, so I guess i have to be resigned to the fact that it really is a 28,8 movement.

as for replacing movements. probably the one mod everyone should learn to make sure your reps will last indefinitely.

I don't know about being flamed, but all the current ETA movements started life as 17 or 21k movements. They are now running them at 28.8 so in effect they are all overclocked movements also. Not necessarily a bad thing. But yes they will last longer running at slower speeds. That's why Omega has underclocked their new movements down to 25k.
