2009 Aquatimer collection

Last year, the star of IWC’s SIHH offerings was arguably the vintage collection, which drew from IWC’s incredibly diverse heritage in watches engineered for air, sea, and the ballroom, forming a collection that should only be described as “must-haveâ€. For SIHH 2009, until more packages arrive from Schaffhausen marked “Embargoed†and “Top Secretâ€, it seems IWC is going for focus and depth this time round -- with a collection of new Aquatimer dive watch models, no less.

Raising the Game
For the IWC enthusiast, the new Aquatimer models promise plenty to get excited about. In particular, the Deep Two comes 10 years after Deep One, IWC’s only other dive watch with a mechanical depth gauge. The rest of the new range comprises three new chronographs in choice of stainless steel and red gold cases, and a new Automatic 2000.

The 2009 Aquatimer models are distinguished from the current range by several new features; the most apparent of these is that the rotating bezel is now located on the outside of the case – easier to work them when wearing gloves, the reasoning goes. Not only do the new Aquatimers lose a crown as a result, the bezels are also entirely new. While other manufacturers have sought to innovate by crafting bezels out of ceramic, IWC has taken a rather unusual route, its bezel is a 4mm-wide sapphire crystal ring fitted atop six coats of SuperLuminova. It’s too early to comment on this, other than that legibility is excellent, and the visual effect, what with the yellow-black or blue-orange color combinations, is stunning.

Yet another new feature is the bracelet quick-change system. Developed by IWC under a patent license from its Richemont sister-brand, Cartier, the system securely anchors the strap or bracelet when the watch is worn on the wrist. However, when the occasion requires, the user can easily swap between steel bracelet and rubber/synthetic strap in a matter of seconds, without needing tools, by simply applying finger pressure on the underside of the lug.

The new Aquatimers have also grown somewhat – case sizes have grown to 44 mm in the automatic and chronograph models from 42 mm in the current range, while the Deep Two is the largest of the new lot, at 46 mm.

Aquatimer Deep Two
Watches with mechanical depth gauges can be counted with one hand: there was the Favre-Leuba “Bathy 50†(1966), Deep One (1999) which was reportedly so expensive to make it was discontinued after no more than a thousand were made, and 2007’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic. Deep Two marks IWC’s return to the scene, and thankfully, the manufacture has much to show for its prolonged absence.

Aquatimer Deep Two with mechanical depth gauge

Instead of using centrally-mounted hands vying for dial space with the time-telling hands to tell the depth as in the case of Deep One, the display method in Deep Two scores for clarity: only the raised tips of the dual depth indicators are visible through the semi-circular slot cut into the dial, blue for current dive depth, and red for greatest depth of the dive.

But the changes are not merely cosmetic. With the experience from creating Deep One, IWC has made Deep Two more reliable than its predecessor, by having its depth measuring mechanism entirely independent of the watch movement. In Deep One, the pressure sensor is a flexible tube arranged internally around the movement. In a dive, it filled with water and deflected proportionately with increasing water pressure to drive the hands whose arbor had to be passed centrally through the movement itself (See REVOLUTION ASIA #13).

Deep Two, on the other hand, has its pressure measurement system contained in a second large crown located on the left side of the case. Water pressure acts directly on a sprung and mechanically-guided membrane inside this crown, which forces a pin into the interior of the case to actuate a lever mechanism situated just beneath the rotor. In this design, the depth indicators are arrayed around the movement, not mounted through it. The end result is a more reliable system, with depth gauge and time-telling systems wholly independent of each other. Indeed, the depth gauge will continue to function even if the movement stops.

Aquatimer Deep Two 3D models

In 46mm stainless steel case and a height of 15.5mm, Deep Two has a maximum depth reading of 50 meters (sane diving does not go beyond 40m) while the watch itself is rated water resistant to 12 bar (120 meters). It uses the 30110 self-winding movement with central seconds, date and 40 hours’ power reserve.

Aquatimer Chronographs
Of the three chronographs in the new Aquatimer range, the most striking is the Edition Galapagos Islands, named for IWC’s collaboration with the Charles Darwin Foundation to mark Darwin bicentennial year in 2009. In matt black stainless steel case completely coated with vulcanized rubber, visual contrast from the stark white markings, stealth black case and surface texture come together to stunning effect – and it’s for a good cause. IWC’s support for the Charles Darwin Foundation contributes towards the conservation of the natural environment of the Galapagos Island, where Darwin’s theory of evolution was hatched.

The Aquatimer Chronograph in Red Gold is distinguished not only by its luxurious case material but also the movement that beats within: while the stainless steel and Edition Galapagos are both fitted with the caliber 79320 (modified from the Valjoux 7750, with 44 hours’ power reserve), the red gold chronograph is the first Aquatimer to be fitted with IWC’s in-house caliber 89360 (with 68 hours’ power reserve) which is also used in the Da Vinci chronograph, featuring intuitive two-hand display of long stop times, and IWC’s double-pawl automatic winding system. In 44mm case, the movement can be viewed through the sapphire caseback of the watch.

Aquatimer Automatic 2000
This is the latest in a line of IWC watches bearing the “2000†moniker which dates back to 1982’s Ocean 2000, which refers the watch’s water resistance to a colossal depth of 2000 meters. With a larger stainless steel case (44mm) and an external rotating bezel, the 2009 Automatic 2000 looks nothing like the model it replaces. Fitted with the caliber 30110, the Automatic 2000 will be launched with two dial variants: in black dial with yellow quarter segment on the bezel, and white dial with orange numerals.
