Photobucket Virus??

Whenever I try to go to my albums in Photobucket, I am besieged by a virus:
"Your system is at risk and you need Antivirus 2009 to clean your system - click here to start the scan" - or some crap basically like that.
It doesn't seem to hit me from any other sites or basic use. Of course I immediatley shut that site down, and have no problems otherwise.
This just started today, but I haven't been on Photobucket for a few days. Has anyone else had this problem?
Anyone know how I can make Photobucket aware? I can't contact from their site because I am immediately attacked when I go there (even going to their main page automatically recognizes my computer and logs me into my account)

By The Way - WARNING: this appears to be the same virus my daughter clicked on a month ago thinking it was "official". It went past the Anti-Virus software and disabled it. It then took control of the computer and screwed with everything. My computer guy couldn't deal with it (only time that's happened) and refered me to a company that is bad-a$$. It took them 3 weeks to clean it off, and several times they told me they thought we were just going to have to throw the entire system in the trash.

I used photobucket yesterday without any problems. I WAS using a computer with a Norton antivirus program though, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

It's a scam/virus/worm whatever you do never click on it.... basically if you do download it it will do a 'scan' and tell you that you have a LOT of worms and viruses and then it prompts you to buy it in order to delete them.

So thanks for the warning Roger. :)

All of those are scams. When someone clicks on it, it actually installs a component into Internet explorer called a Browser Helper Object which can do anything from change your homepage to constantly send repeated pop-ups. You can get around it temporarily if you are using Internet Explorer. Look in tools, Internet options, select the programs tab, click the manage add-ins and look for the BHO. It will usually be named something strange that you do not recognize. It can be disabled there so that it will not work, then you have to get something to clean up the BHOs. which will usually involve turning off automatic restore, then cleaning in safemode.

You are already infected.. and the virus puts these popups when it detects a popular url that you have traveled to. You would suspect a virus if you had went to Romanian Midget Sex dot com but not Photobucket.. that's part of their trickery.

You need to clense your computer.. and that can be a lot of work.

Start here: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

You will likely need:
AVG Antivirus http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-v ... ee-edition
Spybot S&D http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-a ... 22137.html
AdAware http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-Annive ... =mncol;pop
SpywareBlaster (for prevention) http://www.download.com/SpywareBlaster/ ... =mncol;pop

My Job Title at work:
"Chief Troubleshooter, IT Chiropractor, Applications Overseer, Backup Administrator, Business Navigator, Network Configurator, Hardware Handyman, Inventory Gatekeeper, Shark, Budget Defender, Infrastructure Psychic, Air Traffic Controller, Home Office Help Desk, Resident Peace Keeper, Serial Lunch Skipper"

My favorite one to play is "Infrastructure Psychic" because I get to pull out my chicken bones and dance around the office like a possessed gypsy displaced somewhere in Louisiana , ridding our network of network demons.

I keep threatening to migrate my company to Mac based on the performance experiences of the 2 Macs my kids have had for over 2 years (with no lock-ups or re-starts).

@D4M - I am running Trend antivirus, and it shows nothing. Only the photobucket site triggers this. I'll try to follow your advice to the best of my technical capabilities (which ends with the ability to type this message). Thanks!

Sounds like an advert popup. Especially if the warning box looks like Windows and not TREND. Your virus check should detect and warn if a real virus when it kicks off. Start with an virus definitions update to current and full scan and that should find it unless it is very nasty. If nothing is found, next time it happens, do the three finger salute (CTRL+ALT+DEL) click on PROCESS, click on CPU to sort % from most to zero. One of those w/CPU usages will be your virus. If you art Windows power user you'll probably pick it right off. With the file name, You can check at the Trend site to see if it's a valid virus/and how to remove. If you want, screen capture the page and email to me and I"ll review it for you and tell you how to get rid of it.
BTW - this is easy for me, but adding a link to a bracelet strikes fear into my heart.

OK - I re-ran the Trend definitions. It said they were up to date both before and after updating.
I ran a full system scan. It found a few cookies - nothing unusual.

I went to Photobucket... no problem whatsoever. Whatever the problem and wherever it was emanating from, it seems to have been resolved. Or is lying in wait - who the hell knows?

Thanks for all the input guys!!

Anyway... have I mentioned how much I hate Windows??

LevelM,
good to hear... I hope nothing else annoying shows up... in the meantime, BACK UP YOUR HARD DRIVE... just in case... and give in to the temptation to go Mac... I use PC for work (because I got IT a phone call away) but use Mac for fun... and it is fun and reliable.

Ok, I had the same issue earlier today. It was a google initiated warning that suggested that there was Adware viruses on the site. I went back an hour later and the warning was still there. A further hour later and it was gone. The message originally suggested that there were zero infections so I'm not clear as to whether this was a genuine problem or what. There was a list of servers that had supposedly had been infected.

Is it conceivable that google is scanning for viruses? Possible since they are constantly probing websites. If it's a scam I fail to see the point since there is was no suggestion of a 'pay me now to fix it' button.

Anyone have any factual info about this?

So, as a precaution, I downloaded my companies whizz-bang anti-virus software and installed it. It has been running for over an hour now and nothing has shown up yet. I've got a second drive to go and so I'm going to bed now; if anything shows up I'll post in the morning. What a pain in the arse!

Ahhh Macs... I hate them so much, they're good for only 4 things: Internet, music, video and anti-virus capabilities. I think you can now run the latest games for Mac including great hits like:

Mario Bros 2, Zelda 1-3 [Ocarina of time and up are scheduled for the year 2020], Doom [will run laggy], Pong! And many more!

That's funny stuff...

I have had programs close on me automatically a couple of times, when I've had a large number of programs open that included Microsoft (Rip-)Office, true... but viruses/Trojans,... rarely affect Macs. In addition, you actually GET customer service when you contact Mac... when I first got my Mac (as I had always been a PC guy), I was on the phone well over an hour with someone walking me through how to use the thing!! Try that with ANY PC manufacturer... particularly Dell (every time I have called Dell has been a waste of my time... long wait, incapable folks on the other line, people having to come to my house when I HAD IDENTIFIED IT WAS ONLY A CABLE PROBLEM, and don't get me started on Vista... in short, PCs are like pink-colored
Bradley_M2A2-4.jpg

Slow (~35mph max... downhill!), gives you false sense of security (all this must protect me... it must, mustn't it?), a nice visible target for ANY and ALL kinds of attacks (viruses, Trojans,...), little to counter but the hope that the attack won't blast the whole thing in one shot, do I have to go on?

Now if you like to play games, PCs are probably better (I don't play video games and can't really speak to that issue) and there are still programs you can't find designed for Macs (but hey, just install Windows for Mac!). For 98% of what I do on both home and work computers I need MS Word, SPSS, LISREL, PowerPoint, Excel, internet browser, Acrobat, email, picture, movie, music,... and Mac has been hands-down a hassle-free better performer... but that's just my personal experience... just like some people have been lucky with 7750 with sec @6!!
