Ok, I've been reading here for a while now, learning lots about Rep's and their owners and I'm curious about something.
What do you enjoy the most - simply owning an 'Ultimate' version of a watch - or - improving a watch over time to create your own idea of what your perfect watch should be?

Buying an ultimate is great.... i am wearing my Skyland today and I'm very happy with it...

Yesterday though, I wore my 001B.... it has been built from the case up with special parts and lumed by Ziggy... it's much more special to me than the Skyland could ever be..... i also have a fully built 063 that is my pride and joy...

As someone with 4 builds going on right now of Panerai models (201a/002D/003B/009B), I can tell you the fun is in the chase of parts and building a beautiful piece....anyone can swipe a credit card...

That's really what intrigued me. :) :)
Following the work that goes into some of these incredible pieces, it's easy to spend as much as a good used Gen would have cost, so there has to be more to it doesn't there

I could not agree with you more.

I think it is an aquired taste or would have to be my holy grail before I would go too far. I know some who will not wear a nice watch if the caseback is not 100% accurate. ??? lol that's just nuts imo. But... the level of watch sickness is different with everyone.. and... arent we in this hobby to make ourselves happy.. .if that is what does it for them,, more power to them! They just need quality modification help which seems to be what we are lacking currently.
I've added all of the ETA movement data sheets to our VIP download area for self attempts (which usually result in repair tickets for modders..lol)
so at least they understand where "that tiny little spring" goes after they have take the hands and dial off and flipped it upside down and stuff came off..
ahh.. I'm telling on myself now... had better shut up..

Yep, I'm with LOS. The "thrill of the hunt" and the sense of accomplishment after your build is done (but it's never *really* done, which is also part of the fun).

You really can't get more satisfaction than wearing a mod that you spent months hunting for the parts to make as good as it possibly can get.

Good question, Rocketeer!

I love to build. Every watch I touch is improved somehow. There is a satisfaction in it. I don't go to the extremes that some do but as the great Cartman says, it's hellafun.

Thanks, that's this hobby as it should be, in a nutshell for me.
It's not (as some accuse the Rep market) about getting a Rep that will fool someone on the 'Bay into believing it's genuine so you can rip them off.
It's about making something special, even if you're the only one that knows exactly why it's so special.
'Pride of ownership' in something you helped create in some small way is a great thing. Any TW*T (Those Without Any Taste) can hand over a credit card

i love buying a "super rep" as much as the next person but for me its really the thrill of gather parts and modding a watch to how i like it. Even if its something as simple as a Submariner bezel insert, its the satisfaction of making it better. The only watches i've really "modded" have been my Rollies but even getting a watch and sending it out for double AR makes such a huge difference in the "feel" of the watch.

Like Hooligan said.. its the thrill of the hunt. I spent years looking for the perfect 1680 sub... and i found it.. and waited a long time for the perfect bentley 6.75 and i found that also. Some of the new reps coming out are so good out of the box that they dont need any mods.. thats no fun at all :( haha
