DO NOT WIND IT ! DUE TO THE GEAR RATIO YOU CAN DAMAGE THE GEARS !

Can Someone expand upon this and why it is a problem in Reps and not in Gens?
I am still pretty new to the Rep world and have been meaning to ask this questions.

Reps are made with cheaper components, under crappy conditions with little quality control. The movements are often over-lubricated or under-lubricated, dirty, and always made with inferior materials and workmanship. Basically, winding by hand is often rough on the gears, whereas a gen is nice and smooth. Be gentle with our Chinese toys. :)

If I understand correctly, by hand winding we bypass the gears usually enabled when winding with the crown and therefor we end up winding the mainspring by the rotor only?
(excuse my lack of movement knowledge - I am eager to learn more)

if you absolutely have to wind it...EXTREMLY SLOW.....!

before i put on my autos, i shake them - slow and carefully for 2 min...then adjust the time.....and wear it. easy as that.

problem is....one turn to fast or to much torque....and the movement can take damage.

Yes when it winds on your hand you are charging it differently. Here's what you do. If your watch is dead when you pick it up give it three or four winds. The goal is to get it going. You're not going to damage anything. That of course does not apply to 7750s. They seem to need a couple more. Either way you don't need to wind it 20 times.

i wind my reps and gen rolex's the same way. i don't treat them any differently, just unscrew the crown and wind away.

Shake is such a violent term...I softly nudge, then gently coax until the balance begins to move.

You guys kill me. If you're about to wear it, why would you need to wind away? If it's dead I just give it a couple of spins to get it going and put it on.

Sorry I guess people just need to make things so complicated. There was a thread on RWG2. Some guy said he got some fingerprints on the inside of his Sapphire crystal. Wanted to know how to wipe it off. This started a two page discussion on compounds and methods. Finally I just said WIPE IT OFF. :p

Perhaps I'm just lazy... but when I'm heading out the door and have a dead watch I'm planning on wearing... I strap it on and go. Whenever I arrive, or get stuck in traffic, I take it off my wrist and set it to the correct time/date.

Works for me... my cellphone, PDA and car all have clocks... I'll be ok if my watch isn't correct for the drive to my destination.

if you tell everybody to do that the first thing you know a newbie will shake his chrono a couple of times to get it running, start the chronos and it will be dicked smooth up.

if you guys are afraid to wind your watches you bought the wrong shit. all of my watches wind just fine. the only one i have ever strip out was a swiss eta from eddie lee, not some cheap movement. vacume fixed it with some new gears and that was probably a year ago. i have never had one of my asian chronos strip.

shaking it to get it started is ok to do and obviously will have less wear on the winding mechanism but, NEVER START THE CHRONOS UNLESS THE MAIN SPRING IS FULLY CHARGED!!!!!!!!! it won't have enough power in reserve to operate and reset them correctly and you will have a mess. nobody will want to work on your asian 7750 so you will have a dicked up watch that no watchmaker wants fix. be carefull out there, it is a jungle. lol

I guess I just assume MOST people have common sense. You are right about the chronos.

Damaging the gears isn't just a problem associtaed with replica's. If you manually handwind a 7750 based gen, but do it too fast and hard, over time the gears will also become damaged

I have yet to see anyone who has blown up a 7750 from winding it three or four times.

I wind ALL my automatic windable watches at least 5 turns before wearing them. GEN or REP, does not matter: if it isn't running yet, I'll wind it. It's just a habit of mine. No adverse effects have been observed so far. ;)

I agree about the chronograph bit though. On chronos I wind them 20 turns at least. I use the chronos quite extensively for any nitpick timing procedure I can find: meetings, presentations, gym, my coworker's usual line: "[WatchLover], gimme 2 minutes to finish my email"

So true about reps. On the other hand the movements are made in actual factories, on assembly lines, in modern plants. If they're dirty, it's from the handling and installation, not from the factory.

I did just the same. On reps and gens... ETA movement, chinese movement... all the same. Nothing has been damaged with this treatment. I don't have a watch winder and I don't intend to get one. Usually, I will even wind it 30-40 complete turns to give the watch full power reserve (usually). But like stated above, I am not doing it violently or in a hurry. I have to agree sometimes the Asian movement feels a bit "rough" when winding it manually. Even on a few pieces, the rotor is turning too (in this case, extra precaution needs to be taken). However, so far so good... none of my watches have been damaged thru manual winding.
