QUARTZ?

OK - here's a question.

I'd never owned a chrono until I got my BCE from the Rubster... consequently I was surprised to learn that due to the 9 o'clock second sub (and mechanical issue related to a7750s... that is, I'm assuming you could run a gen Breits chrono all the time if you wanted to without harm) I should NOT run the chrono (aka second hand) all the time and in fact not too refrequently if but to spread the oil around a bit. Got it... but...

I've heard so very many people say, "Yes, a Quartz is more accurate than an auto, and certainly more expensive to maintain, but the jump-jump-jump of the quartz a)looks cheap and b)drives me nuts". So, here's my Q:

If I'm going to leave the chorno hand (aka second hand) parked all the time. Then, how is the look and experience of an automatic different than just having a quartz in a chrono. The hour and minute hands would look and behave the same. I have a quartz PP that has sub dials that a functional so that can be handled by a quartz. Yes, the nice multi-ticks sounds of a manual would be replaced by a slower tick sounds of a quartz, but most the time I don't hear any of my watches. Yes, it wouldn't have that "hand craftsmanship" aspect that an auto does... but the "craftsmanship" is minimal nowdays as it's a assembly line anymore - and - unless I've got a display back or turbillion or such I never see those details anyways.

Personally, I DO like a nice smooth sweeping second hand, but as I'm not going to get to see that on my chrono - what's the difference in having a quartz engine doing the work. Cheaper, more accurate, less fragile, looks the same?

I'm probably missing the difference... what is it guys (or goils)?

I think a lot of us are intrigued by the mechanical aspect of watches and purists won't own a quartz watch. I appreciate the intricacy of a mechanical movement as much as the next guy, but quartz watches definitely have their place. If you need something to be dead accurate and durable, quartz is the way to go. I have a quartz Ti Chrono Avenger that I use as my watch I grab if I have to jump out of bed and run out of the house. No fuss, no muss, nothing to set. I have Seiko Kinetics and Casio Eco-Drives which are quartz and they are excellent time pieces. So it is all a matter of what you think a watch should be, a mechanical marvel you wear on your wrist or something to keep you from being late all the time, sometimes it can be both. With the quartz chronos the second hand is so small that no one usually notices it running anyway. The Ti Chrono Avenger like some other high end watches are available as quartz gens.

I am NOT above buying a quartz rep if it came in a Breitling, Omega, Tag, etc. if they were accurate to the gens. As a matter of fact, if that was the case, I'd never buy a gen quartz, period! However, unfortunately, you just don't have that option given the market. I started the rep shopping by looking for a quartz SMP and Aqua Terra (which exist in gens) but stumbled onto this place.

As for the chronos, I'd agree if the reps didn't have the visually slow ticks in quartz. How do the BCE, etc. quartz secs at 9 or 6 tick? Can they actually pass as faux autos? Probably not, but if they do, I'd be in for one myself.

Maybe my original post wasn't too clear. I have the BCE but it's auto. My fav is my Omega Speedy with red-subs which is also auto. Almost want a Panda now. But, yeah, if someone may good Omega or Breit Quartz chronos I'd be on them. But, to date it seems I no can do. Did anyone have a Tag Link Chrono in Quartz?

When it comes to chronos, quartz can be fine. The chrono second dial is so small it will not make a difference. As you said since the big sweep hand is parked all the time, there is no visual aspect to deal with there unless it's running. In fact, I just finished doing a project Tag. Visually the watch is the same. And since the movement is quartz, there is no issue wih running them because there is no 7750. No one can see the second dial moving when it's on your wrist.

I did not know that about Breits, not being an uber Breit guy myself. How does the rep compare to gen, and who did you get it from?

I have a quartz Omega Seamaster chrono and it is a great watch, except that I think a lot of the appeal of reps is the mechanics. Somehow now I think if I want Quartz, I will just buy a Timex.

So I wonder. If I were to make an RWI watch in quartz, it would in fact be a gen. Would people buy it?
