I had been on the waiting list for a White Dial SS Daytona for 3 years and finally got the call today. I got there and checked it all out, The sales guy said you want to go ahead and take it? and right then I glanced at the price tag. WOO wait a minute, why is the price soo much higher? (I had completly forgotten about the recent price increase). Well just due to that, I started to have a second thought and asked the guy if he can hold it for me (So I can sleep over it) as spending 10K after taxes is alot of money and this would be my grail piece. He said since I am a loyal customer he will hold it for me over night.

So what I come too you all for is some advice. I started looking and reading up on rep Daytonas and have come too realize if buying a rep Daytona will fullfill my long time urge. I know of the issue at six and wont mind putting in a better swiss or Zenith movement into it. Though the one thing thats itches me is the 3o'clock misalligned subdial. What are some other issues with this watch? and how close are the good reps to the real deal? Also who is the best dealer to get the best rep from?

This is the cheapo ($60) Daytona that I have had, But it just did'nt fullfill the itch.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I don't think I am ready to spend 10 grand on the real deal.

Thanks

Get a TT Daytona, for around $8,000 you'll get a really nice used one, I like the SS but TT is the way to go for me, but probably not for you, either way here's a link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ROLEX-DAYTONA-16523 ... dZViewItem

Or get a Panerai Daylight Chrono... so many choices really, I would pass on that SS daytona @ $10K and start thinking of another option, different brand perhaps?

I dunno asad.

if you had a rep daytona though 60 bux and it didnt fill your itch, i doubt a better rep would do it because it'll still have its flaws.

10K is a shitload of money to spend - but 3 year waiting list? wow.

if i waited that long to purchase a gen, i'd pick it up - and take into consideration that it took 3 years to get and that in the least, the resale value will still stay highly intact.

but that depends on my finances too i guess - there's no way i can afford 10K at this time, unless there's some financing to go with it.

you're also fighting material costs of the watch and gen to boot vs rep daytonas around here which sesems to have its bad association with the 6.

anyways, opting the other route is definitely cost effective (really cost effective!) - but like u said, HOLY grail piece! so i dunno.

if it wasnt so much holy grail to you, then who cares, get the rep :)

I think your AD might be nicking you a bit on the price there as it did jump from $7900 to $8700 in the last few months for a SS White Tona (Not TT, but SS as these are very hard to find as you've discovered) In Europe these command over 13 grand and I've heard of some paying 15 grand.

I guess if you're having 2nd thoughts or if money is palying a big factor in your decision, perhaps you should maybe look at another watch to scratch that itch. Whatever you do, good luck with your decision-but a gen SS was my holy grail as well.

there is a 1 week old white dial still wrapped in the plastic on the rolex forum for 10,900.00. he is getting offers of 10,500.00. he thought he was going to make a bunch of money on it and has found out between the economy and the latest price increase they have cooled off considerably. the wholesalers are not selling all of them at the shows now and are having to take them back home with them. this hasn't happened for several years now. there are allot of people getting that call from the ad now. the grey market has stopped paying the over msrp from the ad's, on top of that the normal service cost on them is 1,000.00 now. i have been trying to get one for 3 years now and when the last price increase went into effect i remove myself from the lists i was on. the watch isn't worth the current msrp much less the artificially inflated price asked by the profiteers. it simply isn't the best chrono in that price range. it was ok at the 7,900.00 price but it just isn't worth the new price. :|

Lets make this easy for you ok?
I'll give you $40.00 for that cheapo (shipped) and then all you have to come up with is balance.
$9960.00
Cheap!

why dont you build a franken.. get an MBW case.. gen dial and build a sec@9 with a Zenith movement.. Im guessing $2-3 grand to load it up with gen parts depending on where you can source them. There was one for sale a few months ago either here or on RWG for $4000 i believe it was. You could build two or three of them for the price of the one gen

The 3 o'clock sub dial look to be way off on the cheapo reps (It does not align and looks to be placed higher)

HOOOOLY gRAAAaaiiiillll!!!

if cost is too much a factor, probably would have to look nito the greymarket used section for one. 7900 --->10K? that's a 2K jump?

Thanks for the suggestion, Though I can't do anything with gold due to religious reasons.

Thanks for all that, Though the one pictured is a faux chrono that I have, I know they are better ones out there, and I understand the problems with the "6". Well initially I had an infatuation to get it 3 years ago, so it was not entirely the waiting ordeal. and I wont consider this my grail piece, But the price would make it into one. But the last two years I had been lusting for the Big Pilot far more, But after trying that out it just did'nt fit. So I might be on the hunt for a grail piece with 10K. I am aware of its resale, But lately I have seen alot of the dealers have been putting them up, As I feel they might no longer be limited production.

Thanks, Yes I have come to discover there rarity though I have been seeing these as alot of people on other forums are showing there new catch as being a SS Daytona, So I am guessing they aren't going to be that rare anymore, though I am not the biggest Rolex fan either. So what would you suggest as I am not too sure about spending 10 grand on some thing I can't really call grail. As the definition to me on a grail is a sports watch with a nice complication and limited production. As recently at a casual business meeting, I noticed at least 13 Daytonas. a couple SS, handful of TTs and a solid gold Daytona the CEO was wearing, and that didn't include my Pictured Faux chrono Daytona.

Thanks for all that information, did'nt know the half of it. and definetly agree with you on the old price, If that was the case, This post would have been with pictures and wrist shots of it. I am leaning towards not taking it. Though what would you suggest, Though I am not going to be pulling the trigger on my holy grail any time soon.

Thanks
