hi guys

just found this very useful forum and spent a good couple of hours getting some education on replicas. thanks for being here!

can anyone tell me where i can get a quality daytona rep. im looking for a good jap or swiss movement with construction that will stand up to a many years of wear and the odd splash in the swimming pool. i think i would like something a bit superior to an asian movement..... unless you guys tell me that there are asian movements around that are really good.

ideally i would like it to be as indistinguishable as possible from the real macoy. i like black face steel bracelet but in the end quality is probably more important than style, ( i like all daytonas!)

if you could point me in the right direction of some reputable dealers and some idea of what i should be paying i would be very grateful.

thanks in advance

si

ok

spent another hour or so and have answered some of my own questions

basically a good daytona rep is almost impossible. reliability with sec@6 is poor. dials will be missplaced and the watch too thick. am i right?

have seen a nice white face lemania copy manuel with sec @9. i understand that this is not an automatic but what is lemania? will this be a more reliable option than a modified eta movement. anyone seen one?

You seem to have it right about the Daytona. I have two and they are both with the fixed chrono hands. They are both pretty reliable and no-one notices the sad fixedness of the two spare hands, however my only full chrono jobby was delivered in a non-functional state and never really did well. It became a donor eventually, as the case was better than that of the cheapos.

I wonder if you should look past the Daytona (It's a lovely watch, I agree) and try a nice Breitling. The Breitling Chronomat Evolution (known as a BCE) comes in some fabulous reps, and can be a little better-looking than a Daytona. The two-tone is perhaps the flashest watch you can get without being silly.

Regarding buying. Read the appropriate sections under Watch Experts, you will soon work out who's got what. For a more random opportunity, but a better one in many ways, look at the member's sales. Good hunting.

The Daytona is a tough one. I have a Daytona where there chrono hands move as date indicators (but it still looks like a chrono). This watch has been running fine for over seven years now. Be careful with the Daytona.
Good luck!

Biggest flaw in the Daytona (assuming you can live with the ticking time-bomb that is seconds @ 6 or the totally wrong seconds at 9) is the case of every Daytona I've seen is too thick. If you look on this site (http://www.rolexsavings.com/rolex_watch_case_size), you'll notice that the correct dimensions of the Daytona are 39mm and 12.2mm thick. Contrast that with Josh's sec@6 model (http://www.pc-80108.com/rldf10002-white ... p-909.html) and you'll see the reps are 40mm and 12.5mm thick (although, having seen a few of these reps, I think the thickness is closer to 13mm or more).

"Lemania" is a type of manual movement (that is, you wind it yourself every day). Whenever you see the term "lemania," it's a bit of a misnomer, as there are no true lemania replicas. It's just a shorthand (and incorrect) way of saying that the watch has a manual movement.

im new to this!

when seanf said" or the totally wrong sec @ 9 " i took that as meaning totaly wrong not pre 2000.

so a manual with secs @ 9 would be a reasonable , reliable choice... assuming i dont mind wearing a pre 2000 model?

Flaws on the manual daytonas are:

symmetrical pushers
not working 6 o clock hour totalizer
maybe some font issues

none the less. it is a rep of a ~30.000$ watch. But not many know. and the watch is really a classic! bit small but thats the classic part :D

Oh yes. the "lemania" (it is not lemania but looks like it, reproduction movement let's say).. is VERY good. one of the best movements used in reps.

A pre 2000 seconds@9 Daytona with a 7750 would be fine since it doesn't heve the stress on the movement.

I didn't see it mentioned, but my biggest problem with the Daytona Replicas is the bezel. The whole case is thicker, yes, but that's not always noticeable. I never bought one because the bezel is no where near as flat as the genuine. It's hard to notice in pictures, but the replica bezel tapers down from the crystal to the case. The angle is a lot less on the genuine and it almost appears flat. If you can find a side view of both watches you'll see what I mean.
