Well as we all know the key to not having to use your concealed weapon is to not put yourself in situations that require it. I am a NRA certified shooting instructor and used to teach the concealed carry safety class in Va. That is the best advice I could give my students. I can assure you if you were a criminal and you saw my weapon I was firing it at you. The best deterent is situational awareness. But there is no better way to be hurt or killed than to draw a firearm you do not intend to use.
I was jhust going to post this same sentiment. Do not carry a firearm unless you are prepared, ready, and willing to use it. Simply brandishing your pistol is not going to deter anybody. Criminals know if you were going to fire it you would have fired it already and not sit there waiving it about.
I have a CCW and have only carried once or twice since I have had it. Best thing to do is as brtelec said, do not put your self in harm's way by doing things without thinking.
My mindset has become preparing tactically for eveything. In a restaurant I note all exits and make sure I do not have my back exposed or am unable to see what is going on --I make sure my wife and daughter are protected. I park in well lighted and safer areas as opposed to just any old place with an open spot --even of it is closer (drives my wife nuts) I also gauge my appearance as to where I'll be, IE no suit and tie if I am in an area that is transitional or shaky etc etc etc
I'll be blunt, I'd never have given that guy a cigarette and would have turned around and gone back to the bar until he was gone or had others watch me. His asking for a cigarette was basic recon--he was assessing how drunk you were, how you carried yourself etc etc etc.
Sorry to hear this happened to you, let's hope these guys get what they deserve and that you heal well and remain healthy.
