Man, sorry to hear about your trouble. I hope you get well soon. I am originally from Virginia and hate to hear about the decline in the state of things. Situations like these are why I have always carried concealed with a permit. When I used to be a gun dealer in Northern Va. it always seemed as if we armed ourselves after the fact. Go check out Gilbert Small Arms Range on Backlick Rd. in Springfield. They are a really good bunch of guys.

Hang in there mate. I once got smashed in the nose by a complete stranger for no reason. Just walking down the street minding my own business. Wasn't even robbed. But you have just had it 100 times worse.

Still I know a little how you feel. Really shakes your self belief and shatters all illusions about your invulnerability and the basic decency of people. Time will help but you are never quite the same in your outlook from that moment on.

We can't carry weapons in Oz, and I'm not particularly a gun person, but if I lived in the US and went through what you did, I think I'd be thinking about carrying something. Still it's possible they may have used it against you. I just don't know what the answer is.

I know it's a cliche but look for the silver lining. You are alive and will get better. Some get killed or are crippled for life. Just give it time.

All the best for a physical and mental recovery.

Thanks a lot guys for the support. I've been having a really hard time today, getting looks from nearly everyone, and my girlfriend is very sad. My face is thoroughly blue and I can barely open my right eye and my lips are swollen beyond belief, not to mention cracked rib and cracked shoulderbone. I have been prescribed Vicodin ES for the pain but it's really not cutting it. Police have yet to find any additional major leads, however, there supposedly were two witnesses of the actual beating at the scene, and they did manage to make out a getaway car color/brand, but not the plates. I also just so happened to be unfortunate enough to be in a dead spot as far as camera surveillance; none of the cameras managed to pick up the actual robbery.

The TT Navitimer was an awesome watch, too. I'll probably buy a new one now.

I am happy that I am still alive, but I don't understand. I've always been told to obey robbers and you'll be "fine". I gave them 'everything' I had and yet I still basically got beat to pulp. And the area I was in is usually not known for this sort of violence; it's a upper class region with not too much gang violence (can't say that for the entire FFX area, but the Mclean/Great Falls area is usually fine). I wasn't expecting it at all, and I'm still in shock. I have a Yugo SKS at my home but I have yet to get a handgun license. I'm thinking it's about time...

@ Hellcat: I work at the Dept. of Justice down in DC, can't really get into details but it's what I do.

I've got a CCW, I've been held up at gun point before, I've had other issues where a gun would be an option.. but let me tell you... I would have done everything he did even if I had gun on me.
The second you pull a weapon, everything changes! The only time I would have pulled the gun out is if the knive would have come out to attack me. Then I would have unloaded it. You can get your face beat in really bad, shot and wound someone and you will be in prison for 8-15 years while they are in jail for 8 months.

I will give them my car, wallet, watch.. etc.. and they will never know I have a gun.

Some comments were edited out because they went a little to far for this forum (no one should be surprised either).

You would look up at them and say, "WHAT'S WITH THE ATTITUDE!" "YOU'RE NOT TAKING MY CELL PHONE!"

[Inside joke. It is not my intention to make light of this horrible situation.]

Well as we all know the key to not having to use your concealed weapon is to not put yourself in situations that require it. I am a NRA certified shooting instructor and used to teach the concealed carry safety class in Va. That is the best advice I could give my students. I can assure you if you were a criminal and you saw my weapon I was firing it at you. The best deterent is situational awareness. But there is no better way to be hurt or killed than to draw a firearm you do not intend to use.

Thats a horrible thing to happen, especially outside of a big city.

There is no silver lining in this by any means, but at least that did not ake a $4,000 gen. Yet another reason to be in the rep game.

I hope you get better soon.

Its very hard to get carry permits for guns in NYC (even airsoft is illegal), but I figured out a nice trick that seems to do the job (at least thus far). If I am going in any area of the city at night that can take me from main throughfares, I wear a large wallet shaped exactly like a pistol shoulder holster (complete with all straps, etc.) under my jacket. Its called a Koffski and was available over the net as a very limited luxury leather product on one of teh high-end design sites . Needless to say at any sign of trouble, I make the holster pretty visible. Its very hard to tell from a real holster especially in such situations when it may need to be displayed (dark street, nightclub, etc.).

In fact, I got some use out of this late last night when me and the wife were coming from dinner walking on a lonely side street toward our car. I of course was wearing a superlumed PAM112 that glowed like Kryptonite. As we were walking I saw two hoodlum-looking guys hanging out by a mailbox up ahead, and one of them was definitely eying my wrist as we approached.

I did not want to show fear by crossing the street so we walked ahead. As we walked next to them, one of them stepped forward and asked if I had a light, so I opened my jacket, making the holster very visible, patted my inside pocket and told him that I seemed to have run out of matches. When he saw the holster, the guy just stepped back and said "Nice Watch!" and walked away quickly with his buddy....

Obviously I almost crapped my pants.... I just hope I never run into a mugger thats familiar enough with limited edition luxury mens leather products to spot my Koffski wallet for what it is....

I was jhust going to post this same sentiment. Do not carry a firearm unless you are prepared, ready, and willing to use it. Simply brandishing your pistol is not going to deter anybody. Criminals know if you were going to fire it you would have fired it already and not sit there waiving it about.

I have a CCW and have only carried once or twice since I have had it. Best thing to do is as brtelec said, do not put your self in harm's way by doing things without thinking.

My mindset has become preparing tactically for eveything. In a restaurant I note all exits and make sure I do not have my back exposed or am unable to see what is going on --I make sure my wife and daughter are protected. I park in well lighted and safer areas as opposed to just any old place with an open spot --even of it is closer (drives my wife nuts) I also gauge my appearance as to where I'll be, IE no suit and tie if I am in an area that is transitional or shaky etc etc etc

I'll be blunt, I'd never have given that guy a cigarette and would have turned around and gone back to the bar until he was gone or had others watch me. His asking for a cigarette was basic recon--he was assessing how drunk you were, how you carried yourself etc etc etc.

Sorry to hear this happened to you, let's hope these guys get what they deserve and that you heal well and remain healthy.

I agree with both points as they apply to the "real" criminals, who may be armed and dangerous. If anyone ever pulled a weapon on me, I would give them what they wanted, even if I was carrying my SIG SAUER (boy, I wish I could get a carry license for it... sigh..)

But in places like NYC there is no shortage of mugger wannabees who will not hesitate to beat the crap out of you and rob you blind if they outnumber you and think they can get away with it, but who are not otherwise armed (a smart thing because armed robbery is a HUGEly punished crime in NYC). In such cases, haveing a visible deterrent can make a big difference.

And of course in the case here, our fellow board member got jumped and beat up before he could do anything and so having or not having a gun would not have made a difference. With his black belt, he would have likely kicked their ass in a fair fight, but those damn criminals just dont seem to fight fair.

WOW im so sorry to hear this.. just brutal

these idiots dont fight fair.. they will do whatever they have to do to get you on the ground and under submission. I know a guy that was walking to his car at night and got hit in the back of the head with a GOLF CLUB, and then robbed and left there to die. I worry about this too... but im ALWAYS on guard when walking around at night when there are shifty looking people around.. one hand on my knife and the other hand ready to pull out my baton. Its unfortunate that it has to come to this but i dont want that to happen to me and as you can read from this story.. it happens just that fast and out of nowhere.

I see where you edited, and it seems that a prominent member makes some sort of comment based on the musical preferences of the assailants. Sounds like stereotypes are at play. Mods, Id like to thank you for editing out the comments that I am almost certain, given the context, would have offended me immensely.

Sorry to hear the news

I'm with HK45CA... But I can't say what I would actually do in a tramatic situation since it has never happened to me. But knowing that a fellow "Board Bro" has had some bad luck makes me think of going to VA on a SCUM BAG HUNT. What is the bag limit there?
