Can they do anything about this? I mean legally? can they track my internet use and threaten me with it??

If it's true, yes.

Did you download a copy of Evan Almighty? If so, you did so leaving a trace.

If you downloaded a pirated copy of a movie, you left evidence of your actions on other machines.

What kind of trace? Well, let's start with asking if you have a basic understanding of TCP/IP and P2P ...

More great advice, but it's still too late for the OP. He's been caught by a honeypot MPAA share.

I'd agree. Don't use torrents for certain things. Use newsgroups instead. They can't tell wtf you are downloading off there, only that you are connected to them. I downloaded 400 gigs from newsgroups in one month once and all they did was shut me down because they have a 300 gigabyte cap on their "unlimited internet service". Needless to say, they never did that to me again. They told me I was connected to giganews but did not have a problem with that.

I downloaded about 200-300 gigs from torrent over the course of 2 months and completely quit off that site because that is a dangerous amount of data to share on the internet. People DO get caught and sued although it is rare.

Prevention is of course the best idea. Stuff like Usenet instead of BT and PeerGuardian are excellent advice, and it's the sort of thing even a cursory glance into the risks will turn up.

If you're pirating movies and music in the US, and you're not taking precautions, you are taking a risk. As long as you're aware of the risks, go nuts!

If you get caught, don't get caught lying. Don't deny you were downloading stuff, unless you can claim your wifi was hijacked, but say "Sorry, I'll not do it again. I understand the errors of my son's ways and I've disciplined him to not use these sites any more."

Oh, and whatever you do, don't do Kazaa.

Amptor,

You are exactly right in that it is rare for these movie makers to sue. This should be a wake up call for you Sexybeast. The attorneys for the client probably just sent your ISP a demand letter. "We demand that user xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx stop downloading our copywritten material"

I hope you are scared, but I also hope that is the end of for you.

Be wise.

That runs on a Mac?

Torrent applications require systems to secure the downloads from being tracked by the MPAA. Just downloading from piratebay.org, demonoid.com or mininova.org doesn't give you any form of security.

Oh, correct. For Mac "Azureus" should work.

It is correct that non of these clients does anything about RIAA etc getting your ip adress etc.... AFAIK RIAA did not yet sue any members of private (so called Anti-Leech) trackers. At least here in Germany..

I wouldn't go that far, I'd just either pay more attention to the shady file sharing sites or just strictly stick to ftp and newsgroup and be fine. otherwise I'd change ISPs immediately and just do whatever, it's not like they're going to catch you on two different systems unless you use the same login ID on both places if you have to log in somewhere.

I think the DMCA signed by Bill Clinton allows you to have up to $5000 worth of pirated software/movies/music and if you get caught I guess you pretty much get a slap on the wrist unless of course you are selling it which I highly doubt this guy is doing. And I believe this is Just because there are a lot of people out there that are unaware that downloading certain things is illegal and sometimes they are even minors. For example, I don't believe that someone who is 12 years old whom has like $200 worth of pirated goods even is grown up enough to understand or deserve the consequences.
