This happend yesterday morning. I was in France, with my familly, visiting the city of 'Troyes' in the Champagne region. We spent 2 days visiting the countryside.

The last day, we were at the hotel, taking our breakfirst at the restaurant, just before living.

I had noticed 2 men who were looking at me and when I walked near their table, one of them spoke to me.
They were Italian, and only one of them was speaking french.
He said me that his freind is a watch collector and he noticed that I was wearing a nice watch.
It was my vintage 1680 Sub, I've bought from Trevor a few month ago. It's my favorite watch.
The guy said that he would like to buy it. He could pay me at the moment.

I said, no. I don't sell it.

I'm sure that if I have said OK, this guy was ready to buy it for a few thousand dollars.

I second that! Not only can you get another one, you can get 10 more plus another round trip back to the place and sell the 10 for a few more thousands

Although I don't think there is a person here that wouldn't have given it a quick thought, you did the right thing.

It would have been no different that what the ebay scammers do, who we flame all the time. Kudos.

Great story and it was the right way how you react on this.

Sure everybody will think about that money you could get out of it, but it is just not fair.
I could not do that. That was also why i changed my job from selling real estate to somthing totally differnt, because you also fool the people if they buy a house or a apartment.

Greetings Navi

not only you did the right thing but even if you were to sell it....he would have probably noticed the difference anyway when he hold it on his hand....since he said he's a watch collector....

I've had the same thing happen to me with my Omega Aqua Terra. A friend of a friend saw the piece and said I'll give you 900.00 dollars for that right now. I told him it was a rep. I couldn't take the money from the guy, I'm no thief.

Where are you living?

Do you realize how much money some of my clients have made from the homes I have sold them, and how much money I have saved them from suggesting they *don't* buy certain homes.

If you fooled your clients...that's your fault, and probably a good thing you're selling something else.

Just sayin'...

I was living in germany in i quit the job after about 6 months becausee i could not do this anymore because i feeld that bad. But just for me i can say i never fooled anyone in that time and that makes me feel better. I must say i was working im my fathers company and in germany there are so many bad people in that business wich folled that many people with some kind of investments wich where on the paper great looking but in real life it is a total differnt story.

Greetings Navi

The difference with this and fraud on ebay is that this person was approached by the buyer, not offering a fake for sale at gen prices.

That said, it's nice to see that ethics wins out. I'd have done the same thing. The money is soon gone, but I have to live with myself forever.

It's sad that the potential buyer in this case will soon be separated from his money by someone else not quite as ethical.

You could have been up front and just told him you were quite certain it was not genuine and he still may have bought it for a nice sum. If someone offered you $1000 and you told them up front it was a replica and they still wanted to buy knowing all the facts....well I dunno. :)

You did the right thing. Who knows what those guys will do after you took your watch out of your wrist. You may get nothing back home as well. Good will always give good result.

It would REALLY irritate me if I was approached in this manner, friend or stranger. I think it is a completely tacky and rude thing to do.

I would have told him to find a F'ing dealer!
