It's a traditional (well, most likely 19th century) Chinese tile game called Mah Jong, similar to many parlour card games. It's played for money in lots of places (my mother remembers seeing restaurants change hands over games of Mah Jong when she visited a Chinese friend) but just for glory in my house. I've not had enough players to hold a decent game for a few years, but now I'm settled in my new home, I'm looking forward to a Mahjong night, not unlike our poker nights of old.

ps. Yes, my set of tiles is a
good one, bought during a period of prosperity.
