Quick question,

What material is the gen DRSD crystal made of? Is it sapphire? mineral? acrylic, something else?

Also, what propensity do they have to scratching - i.e. would the gens with about 30 years of wear on them show a significant amount of scratching?

thanks

thanks evildee - so how easily do acrylic crystals scratch? would it be significantly scratched up after "30" years of wear, or should it be nice and clean like genuine sapphire?

Acrylic = plastic

Sapphire = one of the hardest substances known to man

Hi MMG2

Acrylic scratches very, very easily--the good news for those with these crystals is that it also caan be buffed or polished out to remove the scratches, and that practice is pretty common among guys who own watches with Acrylic crystals!

So it's your call--either way is OK. What would look cool for a vintage look would be to scratch it all up, then take some toothpaste (maybe baking soda and water paste) or some guys use car care procducts (not sure which) and polish the ones out on main body of crystal leaving some slightly buffed out ones around where it meets the case (so you dont scratch the case).

Some guys have aged the acrylic crystal by blowing tobbaco smoke on inside and outside giving it a yellowed and aged look (you can buff that to taste too!.

Good luck with your project

I had a CD repair kit with some little cloth squares used to buff small scratches out of a CD and it worked great on the Acrylic Crystal, looks brand new now.

Adding to CISO's comments, it should be noted that gen Rolex crystals seem to be made of a high grade of acrylic that is relatively hard and really well polished.

Due to the high grade material employed, real Rolex crystals are somewhat less susceptible to scratches than cheap crystals. A lot of crystals are soft plastic that really scratches easily.

Also, I'd have to say that I like plastic crystals better for the vintage look.

Glass and sapphire without anti-reflective coatings can also be really reflective, which is a big drawback to me.

A recently serviced DRSD would have a brand-new crystal installed as the original would be battered to fck. :shock:

Perhaps I may be of some help.

Here are two photos of my gen Rolex TT DateJust Jubilee with it's original acrylic crystal. The watch was purchased new in 1983, was worn daily for 20 years and over the last four years has been worn, on average, about once a week. The watch has never been serviced or polished. What you see is the result of 24 years of wear.
