Point and Shoot Camera Recommendations

I am thinking of upgrading Mrs Battman's digital camera. She uses it primarily to take picture of the kids around the house, out doors and at events. Her biggest complaint is that her current one does not do a very good job in low light conditions or where the kids are running amok. But she definitely does not want a SLR camera, too big and too hard to operate for her. Anyone have any suggestions on the latest crop of small point and shoot cameras that may do a better job for her?

a better review site is http://www.steves-digicams.com

My recommendation for a good point and shoot relies mostly on your budget. For the money I don't think you can beat the Panasonic LZ5 or it's little brother the LZ3. Both are great cameras.

Cannon SD550 or newer.

I bought one for the wife to carry for taking pictures of the kids while she is out. It small enough to fit in her purse and takes one hell of a picture.

I posted this same question a few weeks ago; http://replica-watch.info/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22249

After reading feedback here, doing my homework, and spending some time at Best Buy, I decided to go with the Canon SD800IS; http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/C ... d800is.asp

it's a great little camera with plenty of functionality...and you can get one for under $300.

If you're willing to wait a few more weeks though, hold out for the NEW Canon SD eight-fiddy IS...everything I've read about it has been positive, and it'll give you a lot of bang for your buck...should be in stores by the end of the month.

good luck!

I was thinking of teh Fujifilm Finepix F31fd. Now after reading this I am moving towards the Canon SD 800 IS. The Fuji seems to work great indoors but has problems outdoors. It would appear that I cannot have both good low light shooting and good outdoor shooting with a point and shoot camera.

Thanks for all of the help guys.

I have a Canon S3 with a set of Hoya Macro lens.. Terrific macro capability (much better than my Nikon D70)

But as for quality in low light, you are doomed. All point & shot and bridge are crap in low light. (my S3 included) This is where DSRL are much better.

All people here sugested some good camera (some better than other) but they would be all bad in low light.

Hi, I've been researching a new ultracompact P&S for the last few weeks, reading the forums on dpreview until my eyeballs gave out.

I'm more confused and indecisive than ever, the top recos I got were: Panasonic TZ3, perfect travel camera but compact, not ultracompact, Fuji F31 fd, superb low light response, not great outdoors, uses slow xD card and no image stabilization.

As for the Canon Powershots, there's a big debate going on regards the best - SD 700, 800 and 900, no clear consensus. Also, I've read that Canon QC has diminished, fair amount of after purchase complaints.

I really don't know what to get, it must be an ultracompact. If I wanted a bigger camera I'd have some good choices.

I battled with the same thing…read and read and read until I was dead sick of digital cameras…ultimately decided to go with the Canon b/c it seemed to be the best all around…not necessarily the best zoom, or the most compact, but good quality, good lens, good brand history, and good overall functionality. I’ve owned a Finepix, and liked it, but wanted something different. Regarding the Lumix TZ3, I was initially very interested but got turned off by a few bad reviews….also, despite the Leica connection, I read some bad stuff about the Lumix lenses….you know what though, like reps, and just about everything else in the world, there are good and bad reviews of everything…I went with the SD800IS cause it was the best for me…sort of wish I had held out for the new 850, but other than that, couldn’t be happier…so far.

I've gotta tell you........I am a tech junkie..and usually get the next greatest thing out there....

IMHO...........any of the newer Canon SD models...I think they're up to a 7.1 MP SD750 right now...are the hands down best. I still have my SD500 ( which is a 7.2mp camera ) and the only thing it doesn't have that I wish it did was the picture stabilization.....which is on all of the newer SD's.

Its small enough to throw in your pocket....reliable...and takes close to SLR quality photos...( except in very low light applications.)

Stick with the camera companies that have made their reputations on CAMERAs....and not TV's, walkmans, and phones.....CANON, NIKON & OLYMPUS....

good luck!

I too recommend the Canon SD800IS (Or any other Canon camera that ends in "IS" which stands for image stabilization.)

Cannon SD800 gets my vote. Ive been using mine for over a year and used it in weddkings. outdoor, beach, rivers, forest and its held up well. Ive only had to have the lens serviced as the motor was stuck and wouild not open. Results of the images are awesome quality but not as good as my counterpart, the Rebel XTI, but when you have to go small cannon lenses are great.

I appears there is no "Best" point and shoort camera. That certainly explains why people who into photography have several camers. The Canon SD800 IS seems likes the best choice for my wifes needs. That is the one I am going to go with. Thanks again to everyone for their input and opinions.

Final Update:
I ended up buying the Canon SD800 IS for $290 including tax and shipping from Circuit City. Looking forward to getting and having Mrs. Battman giving it a test drive.
