What would you recommend as a good starting collection maybe the best from Panerai, Rolex, IWC or any other I may be missing.

Thanks in advance!

I started by choosing the the one that "I" liked and I recommend that you do the same. :)

Give us some idea of what direction to point you. Your question is very broad and hard to answer, mostly because we don't know what you like.

What is your style?

I am really wide open.

I would like a really reliable rep that I could wear everyday and would hold up to that kind of use.

also, one dress one as well.

Panerai, Rolex, IWC, Omega or Breitling would be fine.

AMUN, Well there are plenty of choices and I agree with jb, find out which watch suits you the best and check some of the posts on the forum for the respective manufacturer like the Panaria or Breitling area. There are plenty of reviews and some are very intuitive and indepth. Also you will need to decide the type of movement you would like and when the addiction hits full swing mods for that little something extra.

This is an addiction...............and there is no cure

Except.............More Reps.

Well, as far as my rep knowledge goes:

Basic everyday watch:
Go with an Ultimate PO (choose Swiss ETA if you have 120 bucks to spare, go for Asia 21J if you can find someone to replace it (if it dies) and if you feel lucky). Personally, I just love the rubber strap as it kind of goes well with everything, from jeans to a (daytime) suit. A Seamaster Professional is also an option here, as well as a Bell & Ross Instrument or Tag Link (bit more fashion-y).

Dress / Business watch: A lot of great ones to get here, the Hublot Big Bang is a beauty, though expensive (Wallpaper magazine selected it as best watch of 2007). Also, I like the Breitling Navitimers and and Montblanc Timewalkers, although the Asia 7750 movement is a pain in the ass, most people would agree. So make sure to find a friendly watch smith to oil / fix these (if they die on you) before you buy. Panerai watches are also a great choice, definetley if you are into watches that are more minimalistic in design.

Showoff / Black Tie Watch:
Some people would consider a Big Bang or Panerai here, while I wouldn't. They are just a bit too flashy for my taste, definetley if you are suiting up a dinner jacket or nice suit for some special event. The two tone Breitlings are lovely here, just as the IWC Portugese (although the 7750 with seconds at 6 seems to be incredibly unreliable).

Have you noticed I haven't mentioned Rolex? It's because I just don't like their style, they are a little too shiny for my taste and of course, everyone with little sense of taste and a bag of money seems to buy a Rolex, as it's sort of the safe way to go. Don't get me wrong, some people here love Rolexes and I myself think the Sub and Daytona are not bad at all, but I'm into more elegant, minimalistic watches.

if you are really exploring what style suits you......i would recomend buying lower end = lower cost reps to start. noob or vip mariners and panearis and 21j omegas. all around $100.00 or less. then when you decide what you like you can sell those off and purchase some high end or already modded watches from board dealers or members.
boy...i wish i had figured this out in the beginning. i have some rather expensive reps i purchased in the beginning...and though they are real nice i just don't think they fit my style.

anyway..have fun, experiment, and remember...they are just reps so...:)

welcome aboard and good luck

And know what's best: you didn't spend 4-6K$. So if you like an other watch after a couple of weeks, just buy it and enjoy it. That's the point where the adiction is coming in: for this money you want to have more. Look around in the Dealer section, there's plenty of good offers!
