River's $99 Sub-- what are the tells?

Just got my very first Sub today. It's River's $99 ETA copy. Love, love, love it. Because of the weight, it feels like a cheap fake on my wrist-- so, exactly like a real Sub. Here's my question. What are the tells for this Sub? I've heard the rehaut and dial are very good, but the bracelet isn't great. But I don't know why or what the difference with the gen would be. Anyone help?

If the bracelets hollow and feels like a cheap piece of crap then it just like the gen :D LOL, post some pics of your new sub.

If I ever get a digital camera, I will. Is there anyone out there who could post a few pics of the Gen Sub compared to River's? Really dying to know what the real tells are, especially in comparison with the VIPMariner.

And you're absolutely right, sub4me. I went in to an AD last week and tried on a gen Sub, and I was shocked at how light and cheap it felt. Don't mind it, myself, as I hate the feel of a huge chunk of metal on my wrist, but I did think, "Man, if I handed this $5000 watch to someone, they'd laugh at me and ask which street in New York I got it."

the bracelet isn't great? this is supposed to be the same as the noobmariner which is famous for its bracelet. how isn't it great? the noob bracelet has sharp edges which is a known fact.

The tells of the noobmariners:
- short rehaut
- thick crystal gasket (you see a thick band of grey above the rehaut => that's the least I like about the noobmariners)
- bezel has short teeth, thick on the side => wrong, thin on the bottom => wrong. BUT overall it gives a thick bezel feel of the gen, not a bad thing
- crystal not high enough, bevel not accurate, but very good already, better than most though
- insert pearl shape and size not right
- CGs need shaving on the inside and they are actually too short
Remember it's only $99. It's a very good compromise sub like By-Tor said. If you want near perfection get a mbw and mod it.

I am no sub expert, but I bought the VIPmariner and Rivers. I liked the Vip better and chose that one to be my watch. It just looked better and had a better feel to it. The rehaut seemed a bit better on the VIP also.

Maybe just me,

Exactly what I thought when I bought my first gen Rolex, I had to double check to be sure it was AD I was buying from cause I was so surprised by the bracelet weight but they do use 904L SS the very best available. Since Rolex has began offering the Datejust and a few other models with the improved solid link bracelet its probably just a matter of when those new bracelets come on the Subs and SDs and all the models.

I'm sure someone can provide a few pics for you but its probaly the same old stuuf crown guards, crown, pearl and blah blah blah. I say wear and be happy you now have the perfect sub. 8)

Don't get me wrong-- I love River's Sub. Easily the nicest looking rep I own (at least until my PO arrives). I'm just curious as to what the flaws are as I'm not a Rolex expert and--just looking at a picture of a gen, I'll be damned if I can tell any differences. And I thought River's sub was actually different than the noobmariner. Am I wrong about that?

BK-- I see what you mean about the rehaut, but is River's Sub the same as the Noob? For some reason, I thought it was different. And even looking at your pic, I'm not sure I understand the crystal gasket issue.

- bezel thick on the side, thin on the bottom:
left is noob, right is a cn sub similar to VIPmariner
NoobVsHuisSub3.jpg

gen bezel, thinner on the side, thicker on the bottom compared to the noobmariner, about equal side and bottom

From River's and Takashi's pics, I'm pretty sure River's is the noob, from the dial, CGs, and everything, and mostly the bezel side view. The signature is the deep teeth cut on the side. No others are like that. Look at the pic above again where a noob is next to a cn sub.

Noob's short bezel teeth:
1st is noob, 2nd is gen. At this angle, the teeth should show very well yet they still look short

now look at the beautiful long bezel teeth of a mbw:

even the bezel has the wrong details, overall the noob does have a thick bezel feel:
compare a noob (top) to a josh (bottom), the noob's bezel has that massive feel:

BK-- this is hugely helpful and very informative. Can't thank you enough for posting all these pics. As I said, I'm not a Rolex expert, but even with the pics, the flaws are pretty difficult to detect, at least to my eye. What's the flaw with the CGs? I don't see a difference in that last pic between the Noob and the one from Josh.

of course older modern gen subs (black, tt black, tt blue) have lug holes on the case. My coworker's gen tt black here. Pretty clear lug holes. Pic taken by yours truly:

current bezel insert has sharp 4. gen pic captured from rolex website:

now the question is why would an older sub (with lug holes) have a current insert? Replacement insert!! To be honest this TT blue pic came from someone on RWG who said it's a gen. I take his words. It could be a MBW crying out loud. It's hard to say from this angle. I wanted a quarter view of a gen to show the bezel thickness. After all a MBW has that exact same look. Purpose served.
