Any reps under the radar?

I was introducing my father to the replica world and he asked a good question: "Are there any reps with Swiss ETA that can be perceived as a gen by AD? The question or situation is not to misrepresent but to determine how good the reps are / have become.

Thoughts?

Yeah. I took my Rolex Exp II, AD clerk thought it was real, and also Bell & Ross 01-92.
They didn't open the back casing or anything though (why would they? :) )

There are lots others that are very very close to gen - such as Navitimer, Omega PO, etc.

depends on the "AD"...

if you do clear the exterior hurdle...

do not let them see movement..

most people who work at for an AD have not got as much

knowledge about watches as one might think..

with many reps approaching 90% 'perfection' give or take..

and some just wrong in obvious ways such as AR, font, etc...

yet will give a convincing look to average person

it seems there is a continual quest to 'fool' and AD... and in many

watch dealers, AD or no... you might leave convinced you 'fooled' them..

when in many cases they are laughing after one leaves... LOL

It is all so very grand!

Interesting.

Even with the Swiss ETA reps -- an AD can distinguish from gen to rep if they see movement?

My father (only buys gens) is intrigued with the rep world... why get Swiss ETA if AD or someone knowledable can tell rep from gen by looking at movement? Reliablity?

reason to buy replica

is because is way cheaper than genuine..

many rolex movements seel themselves along for thousands of dollars..

http://cgi.ebay.com/Movement-Rolex-Dayt ... dZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.com/ROLEX-70-80s-Submar ... dZViewItem

so why the need to 'fool' anyone, watchmakder, AD, or?

If u need a replica worked on, simply ask if they will do work on replicas..

if they say yes.. well... maybe they are lying.. but then, you are not..

If someone tells me 'nice watch' I say 'thank you!"

Reps with eta movements very reliable.. Can you figure how manufacturers of genuine watches

get thousands, or tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars for their watches?

Simple, some people will pay the price. Usually, those are people who can easily afford to... LOL

In your dads case the Rep world could be a test drive before dropping a large sum on something that loses its appeal after a short time. My consulting fee here won't be too much!!!!!!!! :D

The reason to buy Swiss movements even though they can be spotted as fakes by knowledgeable folks is two-fold:

1.) They are perceived as more reliable, although the Asian movements appear to be getting better every day.
2.) Spare parts down the road, should a repair be necessary, are MUCH easier to get a hold of by your local watchmaker. You wouldn't want to replace an entire movement if the fix was only a $5 part, right?

An Explorer I well done can fool just about anyone. I still say it's the "perfect" rep, mainly because it's so simple.

Klink is right about the AD sales people. They may have been selling cosmetics the week before; just because you sell watches doesn't mean you're "into" them.

A better test would be to go to a AD get together, like a Panerai night or a Rolex dinner social. If you have the balls to present rep there you're a braver man than me. :)

When it all comes down to it you should never buy a rep solely to "pass" as a gen. Even though the odds of someone spotting a good rep are slim there is STILL the chance of being embarrassed.

The reps are getting so much better, even with the Asian movements. And, they are getting so much cheaper too.
If you have had your rep for 4 - 5 years, and it breaks, I'll bet you will replace the watch with the newer, better watch, rather than sink money into an old workhorse. Besides, the reps that we will be getting in five years will probably be even better than what we get today. Think about it.

If my ORG Omega dies, I'll sink the money into repairing it. If my $100 rep dies, I'll replace it. You can buy a LOT of reps for the price of just one ORG.

Agreed completely, Stan.

Although 5 years from now, I still won't be willing to part with my $380 PVD MM20 from Davidsen.

Of course, we all have that "special" watch we don't want to part with. It's always a persons call if they want to repair or replace.
