DIY Watch box - different approach

As a real DIY kind of guy I decided to make my own watch box. Most of the custom boxes I've seen are made using some kind of existing boxes like cigar boxes or made from scratch as an actual box with bottom, sides and lid. I wanted to try different approach - to cut out watch compartments in a solid wood piece using router.

Let me show you how it went:



The donor - an old IKEA oak dinner table top 28mm thick:

Cheap hand router:

Shapes are ready:

After some sanding:

Application of wood stain:

Compartments finished with nubuck and hinges installed:

And the final result:

My first attempt, but probably not the last one. I have an idea for a bit more complex box. With compartments for leather straps watches like this, and a couple of bracelet watches on traditional pillows, plus some strap storage. I only wish I had more time for this kind of stuff.

I made it myself out of an old sofa cushion cover. Bottoms are made of single layer and sides are made of folded and glued together stripes to hide the cut line.
