Hey everyone. I'm in the market to get a gen Calibre de Cartier and I'm currently in Vegas. Is Vegas as good as any place to buy a Gen watch in terms or pricing and deals? Is it possible to haggle on price at an AD? Thanks

Yes... I was in the caesars palace at there big watch store and i was in heaven.. Don't be afraid to walk out when they give you there bottom dollar.. Alot of stores to choose from.. Don't be shy.. They want your business if they see your serious.. They see a lot of window shoppers so you need to show them that your interested..

Don't forget that most high end stores in Vegas are there to cater to the whims and deep pockets of casino winners. You are a simple tourist when in their store. Nothing more and nothing less. You have to remember that. They want you to think big, a wanna be biggy who wants to spend. And spend NOW ! That all goes against you. So be prudent. Act like you know the game. Bargain down. Really down. If in doubt, walk. Move your legs. Let THEM block the exit door and conform with your offer. Nothing wrong with that. ...........You will be better off being the 'important customer', instead of the days sucker. .....................Good luck !

So should I buy at a retailer or at the Cartier store in the crystal mall?

After recent experiences I don't think I'd ever buy from an AD again. Best dels are from reputable online dealers. In the unlikely event an AD was offering a ridiculous discount off list price I might consider it. Only reason I go to AD now is to try the watch before buying somewhere else, lol!!

Davidsw on TRF is great for new and pre owned. Used pieces are usually in mint condition and great prices too.

I wouldnt buy at a compnay owned store like the Cartier Boutiques. But supporting a local AD that carries many Swiss brands is great....provided they take good care of you. If they dont know you, you can probably haggle to a 25% off list price. But once you develop a relationship, getting 30-35% off retail is quite common for "regulars". AD's buy from the Swiss brands at 40-45% off list prices. If they sell at 25% off list they make 15-20% profit...which sounds small, but we are talking luxury goods, so 20% profit of a $20K watch is $4k....
A few brands have smaller discounts such as Rolex, Patek. On these a 20-25% discount off list is a good bargain.
If in Vegas check out the Watch Dealer in Caesars. Good people. Tell them you work with your local AD and you get 30% off...., tell them you have the itch while in Vegas to pick up a new piece....but only if they can get close in price to what you get at home with your local AD....
No AD wants to see anyone leave empty handed, and they know if you are a serious buyer or a tire kicker....
Have fun with it....post pictures if you pick one up.

personally for gens, I prefer to buy used and let some other guy take the hit on depreciation.

even buying on ebay isn't that bad, as long as you deal with just established US sellers with multiple watch sales, and take the watch to the AD to get verified just to be on the safe side

None of the shops that carry Cartier would budge on price. They told me to be wary of retailers that do. Jomashop sells it for $2k less. What's the deal with Jomashop?

Jomashop is a grey market seller. When you buy from them you will not get the original authenticity papers that come with Swiss watches. The original manufacturer warranty is not valid without this paperwork/proof of authenticity. Jomashop will match the manufacturer warranty, but they are the ones that will have it serviced during the warranty period. You may still have the watch serviced by the brand (Cartier for example) during the warranty period, but you will have to pay for any service.
You can do better than Jomashop on price. My AD that sells Cartier will discount deeply.... Of course the guy tells you no one will discount...he wants you to buy from him.
Look on TRF, TimeZOne, WatchNet etc...great deals and very reputable long time sellers.
If you want the best possible deal, then look for a sweet pre-owned piece...but only buy if you get the box and papers,,,,cuz if you choose to resell the watch, new buyer will want a HUGE discount if you dont have the Authenticity papers..... I would never buy a GEN without Authenticity papers, but thats just me.
Which Cartier are you interested in....happy to point you in the right direction if you want.
Good luck

I want a calibre de Cartier. I've owned a bunch of reps over the years to feel out what my favourite is and this one is my fav.

All of the shops here are $7,150. Jomashop sells for $5,650 which is a great price. It'd be sweet if you can see what your AD can do for me! Thanks guys, much appreciated.

That Calibre de Cartier is a common watch found often in like new condition for sale on Timezone. I have seen these sell for $4500 (considered preowned but look like new).
First seller I checked has a brand new one for sale with box and papers for $5500 and he will always discount a little further if pressed a bit.
You really need to do your footwork here....sign up for Timezone and TRF and look to see whats out there.
No need to buy grey market and not have the factory warranty and no box and papers. You should be able to buy brand new for $5000-5300.
Building a relationship with an AD is important. Being a part of a Gen forum (if you collect Gens) is just as important as being part of a Rep forum....you meet reputable sellers, and network and find amazing opportunities and good buys...
Also, cash deals are alot better for negotiating than credit card deals...
Point is I spend 2 minutes looking and found a BNIB W7100037 Calibre de Cartier.... The deals are out there for you! If after you look around and search you cant do any better, send me a PM, and if I can help you network a bit I am happy to do so...

So I decided not to shop at a boutique, or a grey market seller and am buying a previously owned watch off of TimeZone.com's sales corner. This seller has a great model, and I've been in touch with him. He accepts bank wire, paypal (+3%) and face to face transactions in Chicago. Can't do face to face, so my options are bank wire and paypal. If the product is not listed and exchanged through Ebay, and he is not a merchant, would paypal protect me?

I wouldn't want to spend an extra $150 or so if it doesn't benefit me.

The seller has sent me references (around 8 of them) most for buying, but 1 or 2 for selling.

What would be the best way to complete this transaction?

Thanks!
