What's the hype with Panerai?

I always see loads of these for sale on here, personally I don't think they look very nice and far too big and bulky.
Is there something I am missing about these that makes them so popular?

Some like Omegas some AP's. Panerais are most likely the most accurate reps. They are easy to copy because they are simple and vintage. I really like Panerais

What's the deal with anything people don't like? I imagine in life you're not expected to love, appreciate, and admire everything correct? So you don't like Panerai, some do - you're not one of them. I hate Rolex, but I imagine there's millions of people who love them.

It's not a dig against them, It's just them seem to be the most common reps to come up on RWI sales, so just wondered if there was something I didn't know about them.

I wondered the same not too long ago. If you stare at them long enough they really grow on you.

I really love PAM's...just can't wear them (small wrist). I've even built the smallest custom PAM I could, but it's just not right. The classic simplicity and rugged looks are indeed the main selling point. I think they are far more common (popular) in Europe than in CONUS.

I was the same way. Just buy one to try it. That's the great thing about reps you can try these watches without leaving thousands in the AD.

Well first, like others have said, PAMs are pretty easy to rep....the dials are simple, many of the models share the same case shape/dimensions, the second@9 makes the bulletproof 6497 an option for many, etc, etc....just really conducive to copying cheaply and accurately.

In broader terms, the Panerai brand gained popularity on the back of marketing support from Sly Stallone and Richemont, trends toward oversize watches, and some of the iconic/vintage design features of Panerais (crown guards, dome crystal, cushion case style) all coming together at the same time.

Only thing you are missing is that you haven't tried one. I was in same position like you wondering what is big thing with them, started to read around PAM section, ordered one and now they are reason why I got back to forum after year and a half and am here every day since then. I can just say, they are amazing watches even though they don't look special at first sight.

I took a leap of faith with the hype and bought a black ceramic pam 441 on an asso strap because I liked the look. Until I tried that on, I never really understood just how good they looked/felt even on a small wrist. When I saw for myself I went and bought a Pam 111... it's now my favorite. It actually lays on my wrist better then a deep sea or a planet ocean, with their huge casebacks. IMO the best "large" watch to wear on a small wrist.

There's a lot to be said about straps too, and how you can easily change the look up.

Also it's super easy to change the strap. I have 3 straps for my Pam 111 and it feels and looks like 3 different watches.
