Like my rep so much I was extremely close to pulling the trigger on a gen IWC Mk XVII, when a mate showed me this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf2oJjUoG0I

IWC's latest advertising campaign - as a pilot I found it cringeworthy. Took a couple of goes to see the whole thing

Two questions:

How can they say 'Fake watches are for fake people' and keep a straight face when they turn out this garbage?

Is John Malkovitch broke or something?

It´s in the best spirit of a Hollywood adventure movie, overloaded with clichés -
and still I wouldn´t mind a Caribbean adventure holiday with the lady-pilot.

Here´s what the competition does:

What a terrible advert, ok that's an old advert but it goes against what I interpreted IWC to represent. I'd expect a classy understated advert , not what looks to be a shite trailer with malcovitch as a bellhop . Much like breitling, there's not a specific IWC that I would want to buy gen that represents value for me.

I won't buy gen unless I personally see value in it and think the price is reasonable for what I get. The measure of that is up to the individual I believe.
I have many reps and many gens.
Most gens are Japanese: Seiko, Orient, Citizen (and some Gshocks of course).
I also have a gen Omega Speedy Moonwatch and a 2500 PO Pumpkin - these to me have value matching their price tags. I got both of them at very good prices as well.
Also have a Sinn 358, A Steinhart OVM v2, Laco pilot B, and Hamilton Field Chrono.
These days I am more likely to buy a moderately priced gen than many reps. I picked up an Oris Aquis recently and the quality really impresses me.

Many brands today, including Omega which I own, are inflated far beyond what I consider to be worth my money.
And a lot of that inflation is due to questionable adverts such as these.

Many watches are just sporting bloated price tags because they can and the veblen effect.
I could not see myself buying an IWC pilot when I can buy a Stowa, etc...

Again - this is up to the individual.

I'm getting too much enjoyment out of my 25 reps in rotation, to give that up to buy a few gens. There's now way I can afford 25 gens of the reps I have. Not with keeping my wife anyway!

I am going to join in, I just don't see them being worth the price. That being said. I wear a Glycine Airman (gen) most days. If there had been a cheaper watch, or an acceptable rep, for less I would have gotten it.

As it was, it was an expensive watch, by my standards; but I get a lot of use out of it.

Would I prefer a Gen Rolex (or other GMT with quick set)? Yes. However, I have trouble justifying the price.

I would not say anything really stops me from buying gens. My main watch is and will continue to be a gen. There are some things that make me think twice though.

1. Cost of service and hassles involved with having a piece serviced. Sending it away, customs declarations, a long wait and sometimes a high price.

2. Stupid marketing that would suggest that anyone who purchases certain pieces is a gullible chump.

3. High price.

well price and value are two different things. I only have a few reps but they are all modded up and I love them! For example I have an AP diver V6 with full VAC mods. I can afford the gen, but for me, there is no additional value. mine looks great and keeps great time. I don't see the extra 14k in value in buying the gen. everyone's circumstance is different but that's my 0.02.

As others have mentioned, I'll buy a Gen when there is value. I find value in 'real' materials and in some cases, movements. But, I'm mostly concerned with the appearance and feel of a gold-plated Rep vs. a solid gold Gen.

Rolex GMT is still the best pilot watch IMO!
