Probably a good idea. You wouldn't want to scrape steel parts together.

For winding You have to open it. The crown-guard with lever (patented as "tight-seal-device") was the solution for water-tightening the gasket as a simpler to use alternative to the screw-in crown.
Winding with the cg-lever closed will destroy the gasket and the waterproofness (this is different if You wind it exceptionally once underwater, in that case with the cg-lever closed like PAM-divers could do when on longer missions);
