So next month I will be buying a gen, of which I have ordered the REP (makes sense?).

Inevitably, the discussion goes: "Why on earth are you buying a fake, if you're JUST about to buy the real deal???? That's such a ******* waste of money!!!!"

Now, I know that there are some here who will agree with my girlfriend - those people are NOT welcome on this thread! ;):adoration::biggrin-new:

To everyone else, ladies and gents, I challenge you to give me ONE argument that I have not already tried putting forward!!!

Let's hear them!

Honey, I just want to make sure I love it.

Before I got my Gen speedmaster I bought THREE reps. 2 quartz and one auto. Gave one quartz away, one stays as my backup speedy, and C&R'd the auto. I know I can always get my money back out of the reps if I sell them here, or I might decide that the reps do a good enough job for me and I dont need the Gen, in which case I can get my money back for that as well. Either way I win, either way Im happy.

There will be places you won't want to wear your gen - for those times, you will glad you have a rep...

"Fine, honey. I'll get rid of the rep. But you're going to wear your favorite [shoes] when we ___________"

In the blank, insert what works for the two of you (e.g. "when we: shovel snow/ chop firewood/ clean the house /go to the beach /etc...)

I go with rhp1462's suggestion. Go on, you know you want to...

Unless it's not your money....

Gen = Investment (if you purchased a piece that will not devalue over the next ten years) and you can sell for profit in the future
Rep = Daily wearer to keep the 'investment' mint condition. So if you run into a door jam with it, you dont get sick over it.

Wear the Gen for certain occasions.

Makes total sense, it´s the only way to use it and (try) to preserve the gen unscratched and harmed and to delay service intervals or to save (a lot in the long term) on the part of the case repolishing. Somehow, the more You try to avoid it, the more "happens" to a brand new watch (Not if You keep it in the safe and take it out for 2 hours on Sundays going back to store it after those 120 minutes).

After sporting it for 2 or 3 years on the wrist Your body/wrists will know it so well, that You are able to "magically" avoid any ding, it´s like driving a new car in the second month or after having put 100.000 miles on it.

Other obvious situations include avoiding theft/sports/working around the house etc. with the gen.

Sometimes You will have "satiated" the desire for owning the real gen and just recycle it, staying with the rep.

Tell her you want to do that so you can make a thread on rwi and do gen and rep comparison.

I can't believe this question has been asked!

Look, given my experience, every dollar that we guys spend on ourselves is a dollar not spent on our better halves. And so they resent this. Given the reality of this situation, imagine you really want (and can afford to buy), say, a genuine Blancpain FF watch but you really can't justify spending $10k or more on it. What does the smart dude do? Clearly, we tell the wife/GF that we dearly want the original but in order to be responsible/buy the next pair of Jimmy Choos, we will make do with the rep. So we order it, and in parallel, we buy the gen. We then pass the gen off as a rep and sell the rep on the boards here.

Am I the only one thinking along these lines?

If it's the same watch, I wouldn't mention anything and see if she will even notice lol. If one day she sees both of them together, say it was a unbeatable bogo deal lol
