Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone could give a steer on the appearance of gold reps? It seems that a watch has more chance of appearing gen if it is steel rather than gold as it must be harder to replicate the lustre of a quality gold watch. Would appreciate your views on any experiences you have with the appearance and quality of gold reps.

Many thanks

You can go to the dealer section on the main page or just click here : Trusted Dealers, and take a look around. You will find all the brands and maybe something sticks out to you. Hope this helps. Good luck in your search.

Thanks for the reply! I guess the pictures look good but I guess it's how they appear "in the flesh". I guess it's maybe take a punt and see how it turns out

More importantly, reps are gold-plated rather than machined from solid gold. Typical gold plate thickness is the neighborhood of microns - or maybe a thousandth of an inch max. Since the gold is very thin and only on the surface of the watch, it can be easily rubbed off, exposing the steel underneath.

The plating process is different than it was even just 10 years ago on these watches. They actually hold up very well. It doesn't rub off. unless you are scraping it against something really hard. it doesn't flake off like it used to and it doesn't turn your wrist green like the gold reps used to. the plating is much more durable than it used to be. Sure it still can be scratched down to the steel, but I can tell you it takes quite a hit to do that. My dad has had his gold datejust for a year now and wears it 24/7 and no gold has come off whatsoever. It has scratches, but none have gone through to the steel. so like I said they are much better quality than they used to be. Now for me, there is no way with my active lifestyle that I would ever get a gold watch, but for my dad who is a doctor and is in an office all day it's the perfect watch. His looks just the way it did when he got it over a year ago.

I had a a gold day date ii and it looked great no issues with the plating. I wore mine quite frequently and I was happy with the color too.

I've had a couple of full gold plated reps. And my fave 36mm DD is full gold plated. I wear it a lot. I mean a freaking lot. And it's really durable. You would think that the gold would be worn off on the clasp but it's not. I clean it with soap and water regularly and it looks just as good as it did new.

The thing about the gold plated reps is you want to make sure you buy a high quality one. The cheapies are not gonna be polished to the same level the higher end ones are and it shows in the plating. And I'm talking Rolex here. I don't know about any of the other brands of reps. But if you buy one of the 2836 and up Rolexes that's full gold plated, you're pretty safe that it's gonna be nicely polished and then plated and that the color will be right.

Here's a shot of my fave. The DWO isn't off centered - it's the angle of the pic.

Go over to your regular department store and look closely at the gold plated rings and pendants for women. Now remember the color and hue of those gold plated items you just saw. Now go over to a jeweler who sells genuine solid gold rings and pendants and look at the color and hue. See the difference !! It takes the real thing just seen shortly to make you remember the color of a solid gold item. There is a difference !! A very heavily gold plated watch in the vicinity of 15 to 25 microns [rare nowadays] will start to look like a solid gold item. other then that, a gold plated watch, looks, well , gold plated !! There are some, but far from common. Your eyes will tell you after looking around. Like buying a good TV set, you look at the skin color and hue of people in the screen. The good ones will alert you into which set is better. Stay with a stainless steel watch if you want to be safe. A nasty scratch on a gold plated watch turns white/silver !! A nasty scratch on a stainless watch can be buffed out easy. You decide. Good luck !

I have had this Franken for a while and it holds up well. Not from a TD a custom made rep case. Gold color matches up quite well with gen case. Most of my reps are SS but wanted a couple of dress watches.
