Should I Feel Guilty In Buying A Gen?

I'll turn 50 this month and I think this is the pinnacle of my life since the prime years are long gone. How much is left, 30 more years maybe? And how can I enjoy the finer things in life than owning a gen for my remaining years. Yeah I used to have gens before like the Rolex Submariner, Omega Speedmaster/ Seamaster, and Breitling Chronomat (just within the $3K to $5K range) but have all sold them then as emergency situations arose. Now I just want to "settle down" and own one gen as a crowning achievement for myself (although I've really never achieved anything remarkable. LOL). So just for the celebration of my Life as being "Me".

I told my wife that if I just put aside $25 for every paycheck we get (4 times per month), I could buy my gen within 5 years time. So that's within the $5k to $6K mark which will be my budget. I think that's within a reasonable budget for an annual income of $50K, don't you think so? I told her, I'm not into cars so I'm not buying another one, while I'll just drive my 2001 VW Beetle to the ground (heck, I probably got another 30 more years on that car before it goes totally kaput. LOL). I'm not into casinos, not into any vices (drugs, smoking, or drinking). So I'm trying to justify myself to her. But then she says, what about our European vacation? Or that kind of money could buy our daughter's car. I said, there's always something that's gonna come up regardless of what. If I don't save for it, it's never gonna happen. Then she says, but I'm not gonna spend $6K on a watch for me nor buy me any jewelry for that kind of amount because that money could be used for something more beneficial. I said, putting aside $25 per paycheck is nothing, you won't even see it. All you see is the final amount (but that's the point of saving for 5 years!). She finally said, just do what you want.

But receiving a rep it's like everytime a little exitement, like a kid having a new toy for Xams... How many little Xmas you can have in year rather than having a huge big Xmas in 5 years!! It's of course totally personal choice but i would rather stay in rep for 5 years and get different models rather than an expensive one that i would be even scary to weat to no not damage it. Unless tomorrow i win lottery, them i would have as many gen as reps ;-)

I'm in a similar situation, where I really want to buy a new Jaguar car. The wife hasn't precluded it but I know she isn't fully supportive either. The way I see it now is that if you don't save up and buy the things that'll make you happy then you'll never have anything that you've always wanted.

Clearly you have a passion for watches (like the rest of us) so if it's going to make you happy then go for the gen purchase. How old is your wife? Perhaps, you could increase your savings plan by a little each week and buy her a pair of diamond earrings?

You have a great savings plan and I think around 50 is a perfect time to find yourself a nice gen to 'grow old with'

Syd, I honestly think you have a good goal. and well planned out too. That's not an amount that's going to hurt you from each pay check, and to make it for a period of 5 years. I think that is very reasonable. I was very lucky that my ex really loved my watches and didn't have a problem with me buying them, and I had a plan for each one just like you do for yours, although mine were reps, but basically the same concept of putting a little back each pay check and then when I would have enough then buy it. I also sell things a lot on craigslist or ebay that I pick up at garage sales, so That's where a majority of the money came from that I used to buy my reps. Maybe there's an option for you also like that to make some extra money on the side by selling things or whatever. That might make the wife a little more agreeable to to find another way to add to the money for your gen. I do agree, things come up. buying a car for your daughter, and different things like that. that's just life. But if you can still afford to do those things while putting that money back each pay check I don't see a problem with it. Maybe for those things your wife said, also work on a plan for those things like you did for your gen purchase. That way your wife and you can see what is possible, and make her more comfortable with it and support you instead of being a little put off by it like it sounds like she might be.

The problem I think is that she doesn't have a passion for these things. She is not a spender, let alone a big spender for jewels! (She's 48 yrs. old BTW) She hardly buys clothes or anything for herself to call it as a hobby. I guess I am blessed in a way, huh. But neither am I a spender. I'm not some GQ kinda guy who spends for the latest trendy clothes or fashion. Heck, just give me a T shirt and blue jeans and I'm just fine (and so it is with her!). LOL. We're just a simple blue collar couple making enough and just having enough. Our kids go to private school. Cars are paid for. House is paid for. And we are totally debt free. We are saving regularly as a form of habit. Already tucked some money away in mutual funds and 401K for our retirement. Giving our regular 10% tithes to the church. I think we're basically financially secure. We're not rich, nor poor. Just enough.

I think I will be able to buy my daughter her car even before I get my gen. And for that European vacation, maybe when we retire?? Heck that's only 12 years away!

I agree with "renoz". I have the money....... and the Genuine watches ..... My gens stay in the Box and I'm always wearing my AAA Reps. With the quality of gens availble to us, I am hard pressed to buy another gen. Good Luck to whatever you do.

You should not feel guilty. Opposed to replicas, a gen has a real value, so consider it as an investment.

And 25$ 4x a month is not much, tbh. People spend more for cigarettes, so why not live healthy and have a genuine watch as a bonus on top of that? Can't beat this, really.

I wanted to do the same but the AP I want is 20K, so I will stay with reps or franken.
You have one advantage with the gen, when you die, your wife can sell the gen and get money out of it
but the reps she cannot sell. So go with the gen

I'm all about instant gratification. Buy the watch now on an interest-free, "no hassle", 2 years repayment plan. It's the American way, man! :D Seriously, I think you have a good plan if you have the discipline to stick to it and, from what I can tell, you are a better man than I in that department. How about a similar plan for the wife for something she'll treasure too? Diamonds are always a girl's best friend, or so we're told. :)

Not true. She can sell the reps in the rep forums and with even better cost-to-loss margins than a gen. But we digress. :)

Other than my house, I've never bought anything I couldn't have bought with cash.

If you make sacrifices to save up, the cash is yours to do with what you want, that's the way I see it. Maybe to keep the wife on side you should save a bit each week for the European holiday too?

As others above have said, a gen will retain a lot of its value (unless you make a horrible choice!), so could be chopped in if the need ever arose.

Save within your means, spend the money wisely and the recoup most if you ever need to.
