Would you buy Gen if you could afford it?

While it´s nice to buy and own 1,2,3 or 4 well made gens more than that would signify a rent in maintenance cost and another in depreciation. Sending them around for service (6 months+) ain´t fun either. Unless they are uselessly sitting in a safe they are exposed to constant risks (dropping/breaking/scratching, being stolen, leaking water etc.) so while they have the pleasure part (being gen) they come with a whole bunch of constant worries - or are rarely used.
With the reps I can - and do - whatever I want, always have the proper watch for the occasion. All put together it´s more freedom, they get more use and carry more fun.

Im started buying gen because I did not know about the high quality reps out. I have maybe 12k worth of gens and maybe 3k worth of reps.. I only buy stuff if I am getting a killer deal ie 69' moon watch for $1400 or. 43' breitling chronograph for $900. Im trying to find a >4500 date sub but it is hard.

my first rep was a lmpo so I decided to go to a Omega store in short hills mall nj to check out a gen. The guy broke out his silk gloves and handed me the $9000 watch. It looked really nice but I like my $270 noob better. You gotta use your noggin buying gen watchs.

What do you mean? As in they have gens too?

For me I don't have the job to fund gen watches so I have no choice lol

Of course, and you know this, you do have several choices. The least brilliant of which is to blow several thousand on reps.

Decide what is worth spending your money on. It's spent on either a well-made watch or a rep. Then figure how much you want to spend on a rep, and why.

Buy reps, buy gens, save and buy gens you really, really want to own and wear.

I just spent $300 on a used 42mm Hamilton Khaki Field auto. Swiss motor (duh), thick strap, classic dial (admittedly with weak Hamilton lume ;)) and Andre, my Russian watch repair guy, will work on it if need be. He won't touch a rep, though.

The only time I spent that much for a rep was on the Tudor Heritage Black Bay ($308) which I promptly flipped.

as a gen owner, yes, nothing beats a gen. I originally came here only to look for some vintage stuff (milgauss 1019, 6541, newman) which are impossible to find, much less afford. Sometimes I do find myself asking if a gen is really worth the money, but of course that all depends on what money is worth to you. In the end, of course I'd still buy gen, but I probably will make it a point to avoid brands/models which have quality reps.

Excellent point to make.

Some of the reps are very, very difficult to distinguish unless they're disassembled. But if you can take it apart, you already paid for it!

Never come across anyone who have said this to me: "Hey you, show me the Swiss movement!". Most of them will just ask: "How much?"

I guess I wear reps for the same reason people drive replica ferraris on mr2 bodies...

We want to live a lifestyle we can't afford!!!

Agreed, the gens are nice but they are so close. we build up the quality control with these 10k-20k watches but in the end I really do appreciate my fully modded reps. I now have sold all my gens but 1 DSSD.

When I got my first gen it was the best feeling ever.

Now I stick with reps cause seriously, nobody cares. I mean, aside from other watch enthusiasts.

I have a gen, and can afford more gens, however, seeing reps pretty much looking exactly like gen put me off buying gens.

I mean why would I spend 10-20x as much money to buy pretty much the same thing?

Actually re-looking at the topic, I say why not? As long as I can afford, I would rather buy gens. I rather buy 10 gens, than 10 rep of the same (if and only if i can afford).

Even the enthusiasts can't tell with some of the really good reps.

I have a collection of reps and one Gen which is my favourite watch of all time (sub no date). This means when I want to wear my favourite watch, it's genuine, the rest are for fun and to change things up without the price tag.
