Is it even worth it to buy gen anymore?

It never was worth buying a ceramic sub. Price is just stupid, there are far better gens for far less. Look at the Longines Divers for example or Bremont, Breitling, Omega almost anyone. I maintain the Ceramic Subs both gen and rep are for noobs.

Try buying a good, well taken care of Gen Rolex 16610 LV AND the same version in rep form from TC. You WONT ever loose money on both ! Try to do that with other makes and models and other reps. It ain't gonna happen !! You get two cakes and get to eat them both !!! The records of both those watches speak volumes. [like no other]

sorry mate, i dont' understand -- my traslator is sick ---

you mean Tc sub is good investment?

Great simple calculator here to help determine what a purchase back in any year, at those dollars, is equal to in today's dollars or vice versa. http://www.dollartimes.com/calculators/inflation.htm

Back in 2002 I was looking at buying either a gen Explorer 1, gen 16710 or 16610. I stupidly passed on all three. I thought the sub and GMT were too large for me and I read a scathing review on Timezone for the Exp 1 which later turned out to be a complete fraud. What the hell was I thinking? Anyway, the retail price for the Explorer was $2,200 approximately. The sub and GMT were around $3,100 or somewhere in there? I can't completely remember but those are approximates.

Using the calculator above, and then taking a look at what these gens are selling for today on the used market, they would have actually all broken even or would have put me ahead after factoring in the sales tax I would have paid back then. Not to mention that I would have been wearing and enjoying whichever one I had purchased.

Not sure how today's modern ceramic subs would compare, considering the ridiculous price increases Rolex has issued. I think they are shooting themselves in the foot, personally. Today's prices are just way too high.

I agree with this, especially if you're a fan of Rolex.
If you buy an older Date or Datejust, you can get by for $1000-1500. That's not too much more than some of our modded reps!

^ I fully agree but where can you find these low prices? The lowest I have been able to find for an Oyster Perpetual Date 15200 is $2,300 and that is just too much for that watch, in my opinion.

I think you can get Oyster Precisions and 6694's for around $1500, but not any 16xx or definitely no 16xxx DJ's let alone any 15xx DJ's

The Tudor Heritage Chrono Blue has a cool interesting look and has not been repped: 4.495 USD, my choice for gen

Dont you agreee though resale value on the rolex will be better and you are paying for the name more than anything else. One could argue every rolex is over priced....

You are definitely over paying for the Rolex name, but the resale value on a Rolex dominates most other watches.

My gen is 16803 bough for $1500. I could easily get that back for it. If you buy a used gen, Im quite sure the difference of you selling it in the future will be less than $1000.

That said, buying the right used gen for a good price indeed is like parking the money into a savings account at zero or marginal interest over that 20 year time. The critical difference is you get to wear and enjoy the watch over that 20 years versus the money
just sitting there doing nothing
That’s what I’ve been doing mate. Problem is wife doesn’t want pre owned for her. Ahh life..

I'm back to a 10 slot watch box (down from my 28 slot monstrosity) that I can't quite fill.
Good for you mate. I’m trying my way back to that simplicity and may take some time before I clear everything out.

Whose gonna believe that someone owns 20 different gens? Certainly no one I know........& with that said, that is why when I wear a high end rep, I want people to believe its a gen, not a rep, hence I don't own 20 different reps.
I’ve had in my gen circles and family old guys who have that many gens. I can only scratch my head. While some do it the other way around. They have a 1-2 high end cars and buy dozens of reps with the reason that one wouldn't suspect a guy owning a high end car and living in a gated community wears a rep watch. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Honestly, it was just to buy two new Fender strats without pissing the wife off. But I can sell watches with a clear conscience when they do not get wrist time. I covet things to the point where they get no use, unfortunately I don't have the money for that type of watch collection.

Gibsons are good but Fender US strats are the way to go. The most versatile weapon! ;)

Who cares what something is worth 10-20-30 years after you buy it? If you have gotten a couple decades of enjoyment out of something why would you sell it? I think if a watch stays with you that long.. its there until the end IMO.

If you are buying a watch for a short term gain... or not sure if you really want that model stick with reps and the stock market.

Does the gen submariner 116610 feel any different than the rep versions? I have BP sub myself and I like the look of it, but I just want to know if the fit/finish and feeling will be significantly different on the gen.

The only thing I notice in terms of gen vs. rep is the movement -- Even the reps I have that claim to be Swiss are nowhere near as smooth as my gens when you turn the crown. The sweep may match, the finish may be stellar, but when I set the time the tactile response is a give away.
